Isn't there a govenor mechanism already built into the IP to keep the motor's RPM below 5400? If so, could it be adjusted to keep the engine RPM at a more fuel efficient & longer lasting RPM setting?

With modern high output alternators and inverters, anyone can turn their MB into an emergency battery charger or power generator.

12V to 120v 3500w/7000w inverter
I use my 240 d and 300d to power a 1000 watt inverter off the battery at my cabin to run a few lights and the tv & sat. dish. Alot cheaper and quieter than running my 4K watt gen. Biodiesel is cheap and wvo is free.

The problem with cheap generators is they are loud as crap! We have two Hondas, a 1000, and a 3000 watt. They produce DC power and convert it to AC using an inverter. That means they don't have to turn at a set speed to produce 120 volts. They're really quiet.

At 140amps x 13.5v all you could use is 1,890watts.
I'd just be using it to supply the needs of the car...not as a power source itself outside of battery charging (although it could up to the limit mentioned). I am updating to afterglow plugs, a Vegtherm heater for WVO, new stereo ...and possibly a deep cycle battery system to power an inverter. It's asking too much from my old 70amp alternator.

Likely means the project didn't work and he is just getting rid of it.

Talking

My idea for a 3500W generator was for those of us who just need one around the house for emergencies - this seems like a fun project but more expensive than just purchasing a new purpose-built unit. I live near Buffalo (think October storm - no power for 5 days) and I was able to run my fride, furnace, sump, TV and a bunch of lights. We're lucky and have a gas stove and hot water tank... didn't need to worry about those. Only twice in 5 days did I have a problem - when two things kicked on at once - sump pump and fridge - both draw a lot when starting up... but just flipped the breakers and back in business. Once the motors are running, they actually don't draw a whole lot of power. Mine would run about 6 hours, a little less if we were watching tv / DVD and doing stuff in other rooms too - but I certainly wasn't in the stone age like many neighbors for a week. I would agree, though, they are loud - I put mine out in the backyard so it wasn't too bad.

The point is well taken about noise. I have a 6500 watt (surge) generator that I snatched up from EBay after the Y2K for a great price. However, the 10 HP Tecumseh engine that powers the thing is incredibly loud. You would not want to run the thing all night just to keep the refrigerator powered. (That's all I need to run at night, since the house is heated by firewood - a renewable energy source not necessary to hug)

So an improved situation would be to use one of those small Honda generators at night to keep the fridge going. Possibly this would require an auxiliary fuel tank to supply enough fuel to run it all night. But that should be less expensive and a lot less noisy than running the Tecumseh full time.
