sunvisor / dome light panel shrinkeage

Im sure this has been discussed before, but I was not able to find anything in a search. The 84-85 W123 with the large dome light seem to almost always have problems with the vinyl shrinking around the light. Has anyone come up with a good solution to this?

I may have a nice one from a 1983. I'll check it later this week when the rain stops. I noticed the lamp being larger than my '82 when I was going to use it. Tha larger lamp is pretty pricey. I'm in Sonora CA

I had that problem with the headliner around the manual sunroof handle. I cut a piece of translucent plastic (coffee can lid, Tupperware, whatever) the plastic piece extends about 1/2" larger than the handle mechinisum all around and is tucked under the mechanism. It holds the vinyl and Looks tidy too. Dont know if this would work around the dome light but it might.

well your perfectly right, what could be the problem with stating the bleeding obvious??:D

I think I will order some vinyl that matches the MB-tex and recover the panel myself. It should be straight forward. I can feel that the material has streched all over, and needs to be replaced. I have only really seen this on the 84-85 models with the large light. The older ones do not seem to have this problem. And this car has spent most of its life in the garage out of the sun.

I'd like to be able to offer a good solution, but things simply undergo shrinkage with age...........

It was cold in the water....

My 83 and 85 have this problem... not 77 and 80... The 85 suffered water damage and the 83 probably did as well.

Ditto here as well!

Does anyone know how that panel is removed because I have considered recovering mine myself as well? (First though, I think I'll take it to an upholstry shop for a quote.) It might not be worth fooling with. I assume after the visors are removed there must be a screw or two perhaps under the dome light lens? I've not looked....yet!:)
