Search for threads started by "RLeo" or on manual tranny swap.

Mercedes never mated the 617 turbo with a manual transmission, so unless you think you know better than Mercedes engineers, don't try it.

And, would those Mercedes engineers be the same ones Einsteins that designed that oh-so-magnificiently-engineered air cleaner support on the turbo 617? In honesty, the 5-speed has a buzz in 2,3,& 4 that I cannot figure out...Henry Schumann recommends replacing motor mounts, rear subframe bushings and trying to come up with a W126 rear crossmember and mount which I will do (along with some other stuff) as soon as I get some inspiration. But, the 4-speed did the same thing in 2 & 3 so, it's probably not the Getrag.

I believe the buzz is a diesel thing. Some ford powerstroke trucks also buzz when the stock dual mass flywheel is replaced with a single mass, for reliability.
I'm liking the manual 5 speed idea, but I'm suprised at the number of arguments about whether it's even possible.

It's a serious buzz.
My bride gets absolutely starry-eyed if I'm in 3rd gear any length of time.
I should charge admission. And, I don't buy that it's a 'diesel' thing because the Huns have put manuals behind a lot of those diesels...a Euro 300D for example or a 240D. It's not the turbo either since the vibration is present with any kind of load (acceleration or deceleration). I think it's something with the flex disks (another thing Henry pointed out that I need to change). I'm going to peruse the Rooskie EPC site and try to determine if there's an alternate number for the 5-speed or manual's flex-disks. I KNOW it's possible. I just have to figure out the details.
