I would shoot the head near the temperature sensor on the left side if I was trying to verify the gauge. What are you trying to accomplish?

That's where I checked it. Lucky me my temp gauges are accurate.

FYI: If you use an IR thermometer on metal surfaces, the reading will be affected by the emissivity/reflectivity of the metal surface. Some high-end IR guns have an adjustment, but most do not. Try NOT to shoot at a bare metal surface; a painted (preferably flat black) metal surface will give you a more accurate reading.

I am not positive but i don't thin an engine with 327,xxx miles is going to have any bare metal surfaces. i think mine are all covered in crud

i assume you want to check coolant temperature. why not 'shoot' the intake hose to radiator?

The hose would not be accurate, the outside surface is much cooler than the coolant. Maybe the metal thermostat housing where it connects to the upper hose would give you a better idea of the coolant temperature as it enters the radiator.
