Well, I went and did it! I'm the new proud owner of the car. Truly a sweet and smooth ride with some really great features. Having the stick in the wagon is AWESOME. Its a bit slow on the hills but I'm truly impressed at how well the car cruises down the road!
I'm new to the Mercedes world and am sure to have a lot of questions... so I'm sure I'll frequent this fantastic forum often. I'm also going to be fitting a 616 into my 1967 SIIa SWB Land Rover, hopefully starting immediately. I'd like to go with a 617 for the increased power, but would encounter too many fitment issues. Welcome to the forum and the MB diesel addiction. Notice the dots on the speedometer they are shift points. At first is seems you shift close to the dots that you are over reving the engine, not so. It is happy at those revs and will move a lot faster.

The dots are down shift points, ie, down't down shift to 2nd if you are above the II

Thanks for the info already, you guys...
I've been driving the car for a few days now and it truly is a sweet ride. The only issue being a slightly leaky interior. We found some fresh looking water standing underneath the rear seat when we got around to folding it down- and some water on the rear floorboards(in front of the rear seat. Any advice? I haven't had a chance to dig too deep yet, but there isn't any sign of any rust/corrosion issues. I also have a cd player to throw in there, to replace the SONY cassette deck that's currently installed. Any advice on adapters/plugs/wiring or what not to install the new cd player? Having the 616 and the 4 speed, what is a healthy/appropriate highway cruising speed so as not to over-rev? I've been staying around 60mph on the freeway. Also, what is the little black twist knob on the dash behind the steering wheel below the gauge cluster (left side, almost exactly opposite of the ignition)??? I'm already a vintage Land Rover fanatic... I'm nervous this mercedes might suck me in! What have I gotten myself into! I'll have to check out the info on the "get together" - I'm sure you guys could point all kinds of things I had no idea about. Thanks again for all the support. |

I would check out the sunroof drains for the water leak. Lots of good info on this forum about them. That knob is an idle adjustment. Step on the "gas" and turn it clockwise to increase the idle, CCW to decrease the idle.

also the front windshield gasket is typically a leaker after about five years, and the rear hatch glass as well. these can be cleaned and caulked with black silicone caulk.
