Are 240D and 300d speedos different?

My friend's 240 speedometer crapped ouot so he stuck a 300d turbo speedo in and now it reads about 2/10 of a mile off ( to high)and 8-9 mph too fast.

are the rear end ratios different or speedo gear and what is the fix if any besides using a 240 speedo

thanks

bennett

Yes, they are different due to the difference in gear ratios. The 300D ratio is either 3.07 or 2.88 (depending on year). I think the 240D ratio is 3.46. AFAIK, the only solution is to find the correct speedo.

yup- the speedo should stay w/ the rear end.

just as the lugbolts stay w/ the rims.

I believe you can seperate the odo, and keep that with the car. but I may be wrong.(it did happen before, once )

As said, gear ratio is the key.

As far as getting the right Odo setting, you will need to file off the flats on one end of the pin that goes through the center of the wheels, slip it out, set the desired number, put the pin back in and flatten the end with vice grips or some such.

Good luck,

Just replace the gear set in the tranny with the 300d one.

i am not sure what diesel giant means.

the speedo matches the rear end. including the hash marks on the face.

the gear in a 240 is 3:69 from the factory.

I'd like to know what Diesel Giant means as well.

short update*

Friend took out the instrument cluster and pulled his car up on block to view underneath to change speed gear at trans..

Long story short.... oil pressure gauge line was open and pointing at his legs and floor...

you know what happened next as he drove up on the blocks.
IF this doesnt' work Diesel Giant owes him a new pair of pants and a floormat
