82 300TD tranny problems

Hi,

My 1982 300td 176.000 miles tranny started slipping badly.
Searched I think all threads about trannys and learned a lot.

Problem started after car was sitting in cold ( freezing) weather for two weeks.
When cold seems to run well. After 3 miles starts slipping. If I can make it into fourth gear it seems to hold up OK.
After tranny starts slipping I had to stop.Whining sound from tranny or converter.
Waited with idle for 10 minutes and car drives again without problem for 2-3 miles.
When it is still driving and I attempt to avoid slipping it shift to 4 and back to 3 and back to 4 very quickly.
Fluid level was to high , sucked 2 pints out and added tranX.
No difference.
Fluid looks good, no burned smell.
Removed 6 bolt pan. Very minor sludge around drain plug. Miniscule brass particles. i would think no problem for 170.000 miles.

My MB specialist says Torque converter pushes liquid out and causes bubbles.

Removed tranny. Pff , more difficult then I thought.
How can I test the torque converter? Does it have a clutch inside?

Can this problem be the B2 piston ?

Thank you for any advice

Johan

I think you are further along that I am, but here is my two cents:

1. the b-2's that went out around here seemed to go out all at once.
2. i had the most luck with 'flaring' problems by adjusting the trans modulator on the driver's side of the tranny. or the cable up top. steve brotherton had a nice write up on the subject.

however, each year is different with cables and vacuum issues. although my 82-85's are all 123's w/ the same engine, the tranny setups were different.

Hi Don,

Thank you for your reply in helping me to get her back on the road.

B2's went out around the same time? Temperature , milage, model year ?

Johan

servo and clutch air test

Does any body have a picture available of the 6 bolt transmission with hydraulic block removed and passages to servo / clutches labeled.

Can wear of clutch package be determined by volume of oil required to engage / disengage clutch?

Thank you,
