85 300D turbo rattle in pass rear shock? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

howdy Folks:

A bit of a rattle / rumble coming from the rear pass shock area - I looked at lower control arm and drive shaft - seems to be really noticable when turning corners

Anyone come across this before?

be sure to check top and bottom of both shiocks before replacing bushings...i once spent quite a lot of money doing some bushings on a 240 that turned out to have a loose shock.

I only know of this rear suspension 300D from pulling the lower control arms - a pain to get the shocks out -

oh, how do you hear the turbo rattling from the rear shock? it must be way out of balance, or something... :-P

Check the link that goes from the rear hub to the sway bar. If your not sure what it looks like I'll post a picture. Another problem I had once was the shock broke. I'll try to find that picture as well.

from the title of the thread, it could be taken that the turbo is rattling the rear shocks.
I was just jibbing with you. tons of MB newbies call the turbo equipped 300D the 300D turbo, when ALL W123 300D models after 82 were turbo models.

pretty sure is not the sway bar link - one of the things I check'd as well as the CV -all looks good there- jacked up both sides ( I find it easier to use 2 MB jacks / one each side - ( chocked front wheels both directions) no strange noise comming from diff or axle CV - drivers side jacked and pushed on drivers side to get a bit of wiggle on pass rear - nadda

All bushings look good- car is a southern Cali creampuff - spent last 5 years in Arizona since I owned - faded paint of course

only on ruff roads- and only in rear pass - even rode in rear pass side with a buddy driving to hear - Drive shaft moves fine as well- no indications of rot or binding - and exhaust is good - all mounts present and no cracking

I'll look into a new Boge rear shock - askin just in case I get in there and shock is fine -not that new shocks are such a bad thing

quick thought popped into me head, while you are in there, look around in the wheelwell for a rock or similar causing a rattle. also, look inside the spring coil. a rock up there would rattle something fierce!

D'oh ; i just got that - after seeing the title :

You got me there - slow .......

and yes - - 300d turbo is redundant after 82( I have heard it was 83/ - 84 model year - though I have heard many parts guys tell you with all the Mercedes Grey market imports - the 300D non turbo can be found on this side of the pond - with production dates to end of production- go figure .....

Interesting - I am still asked and chided by some parts suppliers when I ask for parts on my 82 300TD - as it is supposed to be known as 300TDT

Howdy again vstech:

Will look again to make sure - pulled off tyre and checked spring - thinking i am happy I made the group purchase of the coil spring compressor 4 years ago- its more of a deep rattle / clunk - really bad over rough pavement and hefty RR tracks - why I checked all bushings - and the one driving the car primarily is really a ginger'er

Did notice typical diff seal leaking - but from my experience ( had 5 w123's so far ) is typical for the age no?

another thing to check is the subframe bushings. I have heard they can cause quite a bit of heavy noise when crossing bumps and such.

Right on cheers - that did not even cross my mind - and might as well replace as I can get the kit cheap enough - plus the one Boge just to be sure - as soon as I get into it i will reports back
