Is my Turbo begining to go?

My 82 300SD with 172,00 mi. is begining to make some whining sounds when I accelerate. It will not make the sound when I accelerate slowly. I pulled the breather pipe and turned the turbo with my finger it moves freely.
Could the sound be comming from some other place? The water pump?
Thanks for your help.
Marshall

Some folks have mentioned an exhaust leak, especially in the flex portion, causing a more noticable whine.

From what has been reported here on this forum, the major sign of turbo failure is heavy oil consumption.

DieselGiant has a good writeup on replacing the intake rings on the turbo.
