Front brake drum broke

Two college girls in a tercel pulled out in front of my wagon last night. Caused a little scratch on the front bumper rubber strip. Nothing big.

But when I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting them the brakes locked and I heard something break from the front driver's wheel well. Turns out my brake drum broke. The plane of the rotor separated from the cylinder that has the lug bolts fit through. So now the rotor turns at will and makes rubbing sounds when driving - the sounds stop when I hit the brakes since its pressing the rotor enough to stop it. Seems scary it would break like this.

Has anyone else ever had a brake drum break like this?

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean the rotor seperated itself from the hub? In that case:

Never mind. I understand what happened now.

Yes, it is an easy fix and MB rotors are cheap.

Rotor...no crummy drum brakes on your benz.

Well I guess the parking brake is kind of a drum...none on the front anyway.

I had a wheel bearing fail at interstate speeds. Symptoms similar to what you are describing. Not pretty. $1100 fix. Turns out I could have done the work myself. Now I know. You should inspect everything up front. I understand these rotors should NOT be turned, as that will result in too thin a surface, and the calipers might push all the way out = no brakes. The only drums are parking brakes located inside of rear hubs.

Brought a 123 once with a separated rotor disk from what looks like a hat. It is of course the hub portion. If you examine it once you get the parts off you will see it was very thin where it breaks out. Rust contributes to some extent but the design is thin there anyways. I also suspect it is not all that uncommon a failure.

I was just thinking... I've actually seen to cars at pullapart where the pads were cambered so greately that they ate right thru the disc at the hub...... Probably a good sign that the owner drove it until things broke......

i had one break away at that point because i engaged in some overly creative thinking and installed the rotor with only three allen screws.

it came home on the wrecker. fortunately happened at low speed and nothing was damaged except the rotor.

i doubt one would break unless worn very thin.

as noted above dont drive it that way. very unsafe.

You cannot have mercedes benz rotors turned as they are engineered to be as thin as possible to save weight. Turning them would ruin them and cause them to warp easier...

As long as the rotors exceed minimum thickness, does it matter?
