W123 *slight* rear brake drag
Need some advice - read through the archives and didn't see anything on the specific situation....Im a brake newbie.
Finishing rear axle job (both axle shafts) and running the car on jack stands. Driver's rear axle doesn't turn when putting the car into drive, but with a little nudge it will start moving, slowly and obviously restricted. It makes no strange sounds, I think the axle itself is properly installed. When that car is off, I can rotate the wheel hub with my hands. At first I suspected the e brake, but I loosened the cables via the 'star' with no improvement. Supposedly brakes were recently done on the car by the PO at a reputable shop. Is this amount of drag a problem? If so, how can I correct it? thanks, dd

doesnt the car need to be in neutral to spin the wheels freely?

this sounds normal to me. the power takes the path of least resistance. i would expect both wheels to turn only if it is lsd. if you can turn the hub easily with your hands that sounds like the normal amount of brake drag. tom w

this makes sense, if i e-brake the passenger rear only (adjusting star to do this), then the drivers side in question spins freely. dd

Its all in the differential
When on jack stands, both wheels off the ground , the differential has some resistance. ( thick oil when cold ,friction from the gears ) . What your seeing is normal, If you rotate one wheel with the trans in neutral, one wheel will spin one way and the other will spin opposite,. This is all in the gears, pinion gear rotating the ring gear and side spyder gears. Get stuck in snow or mud and all that spins is the rear pass. side. A brake pad may be touching or a e- brake may be slightly dragging, bottom line is if you can spin it freely or with slight resistance your OK.

Just make sure both side act the same way. My euro all the brakes drag a bit, the MBC pushrod is adjusted just to the point of contact. I dont know if its enough to cause drag but the thing stops on a dime.
