Occasional brake shudder.

My brakes will occasionally shudder, like warped rotors feel, when stopping. It happens maybe 25% of the time. Why?

Mine do the same thing. They are less than a year old, and were broken in properly. Maybe they aren't made as good as they should be and are actually beginning to warp.

I had pretty much the same thing on my 300D. What it turned out to be was a sticky front caliper. Apparently after a long run on the HWY the rotor would indeed get a bit hot and bendy then shudder the car when braking. Mornings or short trips there would be no shudder. Of course I did not track it down until the pad had worn down enough for the brake sensor to kick in...

Interesting... makes sence and I do usually have 30 mile highway runs followed by a several hour cool off.... I'll have to pay attention to just when it shudders.

My guide rod mounts are shot and I feel them when I drive over a dip. They send vibrations to the dead pedal/footrest which is right where the mount is. I think that's why my brake feels like they shudder. When I have the mount replaced and it still shudders I'll have the rotors replaced.

Hm, never felt that on my 300D. Im not sure how old the brake discs are but they seem to hold up very well, and I drive my car rather hard.

I'm quite the opposite. I used to have to deglaze the drums on my Mustang regularly because I stopped gently... though drums hold more heat and so glaze easier than discs.

I had a situation like that and it turned out, according to the shop, to be the brake amplifier or booster. It was faulty and needed replacement. I understand that this was a very rare for this part to fail.

How do you break in new brakes properly?

Rino
