window motor test
I've done some searches but must not be wording it right. My problem is that the driver's side window stopped working without warning, worked fine one day and then no go the next. I cleaned the switch still no go. Tried the switch with the pass. side and it works, pass. side switch on driver's side wires = no go. How do I test the motor with an alt meter? Also is there a connection I can check other than at the switch? All other 3 windows work like they are suppose to. Thanks for the help.

Hi,
You can apply 12 volts directly to the motor. +12 on one wire motor goes in one direction, 12+ on the other wire, motor goes in other direction.

The simplest window motor test I've used only takes a few seconds. Simply turn the ignition key to the #2 position and turn on the front dome light. Operate the window switch while carefully observing the light. If the light dims slightly when you press the switch, it means the motor is drawing power and is probably no good. This test is made easier by doing it in a dark location.

what i do is use jumper cables, u can use one of those quick start packs, or just straight off abattery, just clip one of them onto the motor clip and tap the other cable onto the other clip, if working u will get movement!

I have found that most times that I have had this problem it is a broken wire at the hinge of the door. The wires can only bend back and forth so many times before they break. I did have one window motor that had a frozen bearing and I took it apart and re lubed and it works fine. If you look at posts in my name there are pictures of the motor all taken apart. When you take the inner door panel off there is a terminal block where the wires from the switch connect to the wires to the motor and this is the best place to test the motor.

Thanks for the replies. When I have the panel off and the wires to the motor disconnected and put the ohm meter to the terminals what am I looking for that will tell me if the motor is bad? I can build anything you want and fix a lot of stuff but electrics were usually left to other people/ trades! So really I have limited electrical skills. I guess that means I am electrically challenged?
