Swapping a manual into a 300D turbo, Im trying to get the pilot bearing back in and its in but its binding. I assume its supposed to turn freely. I verified it is a 6202 bearing.... What to do?

This is your problem and solution: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showpost.php?p=582003&postcount=15
He told me that late 84 and all 85's have a smaller diameter pilot bearing hole. I got lucky with my engine. It was from an 84 300SD (transplanted into my TD from a past owner) but it took a standard pilot bearing without problems. |

There are 84 and 85 euro 300D's with manual tranny's. Maybe somebody with access to the EPC can find the right bearing he needs.

If you got the bearing into it's bore you have the right size bearing. There is no bearing slightly smaller. A 6202 is a medium duty bearing with a bore of 15mm and OD of 35mm. A light duty bearing of the same bore would be numbered 6002 and have an OD of 32mm.
If the bearing does not turn freely it has been damaged or contaminated. |

I can also fit a bearing into a hole 0.080 too small to accept it. That does not mean it's the right one.

As I remember the 84s have a 34mm pilot hole, instead of the 35mm like other 240Ds

I dono, Yours is an 85 so that would be the last two years of the 123 with a smaller pilot hole. If a 1/4mm made her fit, sounds like your good too go. I havent had the opportunity to get into any clutch or tranny work on my 85 but I will keep this thread in mind. good luck

You have that little "cup' shape keeper with the hole in the middle (for the tranny shaft) that keeps the bearing in place?, you might have to whittle that down a shade too.
