240D questions

2 Questions about a 240D (1982)

1) Where is the VIN found on this vehicle? Doesn't seem to be one on the dashboard as I'd expect.

2) Need to replace the right-hand fender. What should that sort of work cost (parts + labor)?

Thanks!

1. On the driver's side A pillar...there's a plate attached that you can see through the windshield.
2. Varies...you need to get a couple of quotes. Plan on $1300 - $1800 if you don't do any of the work yourself and you want a decent job.

The vin tag on these cars is located on the left windshield pillar about in the center, and can be seen by looking through the windshield at the pillar. There is also a chassis number stamped into the center of the firewall under the hood, that number won't necessarily match the vin though, but is important to know for getting body parts. On my 80 240 the vin and chassis number match, on my 82 240 they are very different. I don't know what it would cost to have a fender done, I did my own on the 80, cursed and cussed a lot at that glue they use to seal it on, my 82 does not have the glue though and instead has a plastic liner in the wheel well, makes the fender very easy to pop off in a matter of minutes.
If yours is glued on a heat gun will be extremely helpful. While you have the fender off thoroughly inspect the seams by the door and firewall areas for loosening sealant and surface rusting around/under the sealant, I just did a thread on that yesterday and it has paid off a lot in catching hidden rust before it got out of control.

The pillar is the upright that connects the roof to the body, between the windows. The A pillar is the most forward upright between the windshield and the front side window, B pillar is between the front side window and back side window, and C pillar is between the back side window and the rear window.

Those plates can fall off though. I thought mine was lost when I bought the car, but found it when I pulled the driver's seat. You can also find the VIN on a plate rivited inside the driver's door and on a plate above the radiator.

What does it matter? Are you trying to track the car? Just make sure you get a color other than White or Beige, and you'll never lose the car.
