Ok , I will drain and refill the oil this weekend. I started reading the runaway engine thread and got paranoid about overfilling with oil. Thanks for all the help and quick responses. At least I have a direction to go this weekend.

Run away is not usually a Mercedes problem....although it has been known to happen.

You'd have to put more than 5 gallons of oil in the pan 'for that to happen.

Most common problem with the Mb's are electrical.
Enjoy your new toy.

I concur with comments regarding the fact that many minor repairs/maintance issues on these vehicles can resemble major ones on other vehicles. As stated by other members of the forum, stay tuned to posted DIY guides and you'll readily determine which repairs you can handle as opposed to those which require assistance from an inexpensive MB Diesel mechanic....Don't panic there's a lot of life left in that car...

Once you confirm the car is a road ready daily driver your daughter will have problems getting you out of her car. You'll find yourself admiring other diesels on the road and engaging in conversations which drives you deeper in love with the clack, clack,clack...Speaking of such I'M currently driving a 87 300D and a 78 300D and have the opportunity to purchase a 81 300 SD 144K for $1,800.00. Don't need the car but can't pass up the deal.

I want to drive it everyday now but I know I have to do some work on it.
Dude, you need to chill out. You say you're in over your head, but you want to drive the car every day? Let's take it a little slower, OK? You definitely shouldn't be pulling the valve cover off if you feel like you're in over your head. You'll really hate yourself when you drop a feeler guage down behind that cam gear. So, just take a deep breath.

I doubt your dipstick is wrong. It sounds like the oil didn't drain completely. Make sure you're level (and the car). You could get the factory shop manual on CD from MB USA (or ebay, that's where I got mine--$23, but PM me for the guy's contact info if you want to buy one on ebay--the first one I bought on ebay was a fake and got my money back). But it sounds like you may also need the Owner's Manual. I think MB USA is the best place for that. Anyway, with limited mechanical ability and a basic understanding of how these cars work, you'll be congratulating yourself pretty soon for a steal on that SD.

Thanks everyone. I do think the dipstick is not the original. I've seen pics of similar engines on this forum ane t is not the same and it doesn't fit solidly like I think it should When I first looked at the car I thought the rubber stopper had broken, but now that I look at it is intact, it just doesn't fit snuggly. I have to end up working this weekend so I won't get to dive into the car, but it won't melt if it sits there a week. Thanks again.

If you have the wrong dipstick in that engine, it could be sitting a LOT further down in the pan than it should.

I'm more than a bit cautious about this issue, as the older VW diesel I gave to my sister and brother-in-law as a wedding gift ended up dying to them running it out of oil after the dipstick slid through it's stopper.

If you can wait a little, I'm sure one of us should be able to post the length of the dipstick from the tip to the shoulder of the stopper, so you can check that at least.

I did an oil and filter change on my car today and while I was at it I measured the dip stick and it is 20 3/8" from the sholder that sits against the tube to the full level mark. I used 7 qts of oil and it was just below the full mark.

Just got back from vacation and my dip stick seems to be a little over an inch to long. I found someone in a parking lot and he let me look at his. Mine is a totaly different peice of metal. I've cut it down, remarded it and put a proper stop on it. I hope I didn't kill my engine running it on oil that low.

Let us know how this works out after the oil change. We're hoping for the best.

No, it looks like one out of an old Chevy. It's got a metal loop on the top as a handle.
