87 300D Maintenance Woes

So I got up good and early this morning to get my new 300D into pristine condition. First, I got rid of the old tattered hood pad and glued in my new one. While it dried, I set to changing the engine oil and the power steering and brake fluid. Next, I cleaned the carbon out of the vacuum hoses associated with the turbo. The hose connected to the ALDA was discconnected, so after cleaning I reconnected it. Finally, I blocked off the EGR.

So its about 12:00 and I'm ready for my test drive. I get in and fire it up and I hear a single beep as I start the car. Odd, but I don't give it a second thought. The car seems to pull a little stronger now and I'm enjoying myself when it beeps again? I go back home and start reading the manual, it makes no mention of it. I assume its some sort of warning for the EGR so I go back and unblock it. Second test drive and it beeps again. So I start retracing my steps, checking every vacuum connection near where I worked. Everything checks out, but sure enough, it beeps again. Now I'm beside myself. Off come the wheels to see if it has anything to do with the brakes. No such luck. I get on the computer to post about my quandry, but the shop forum is down!

Now I'm beside myself. All weepy and blubbery. Back out to the car to see what I've done, and this time it beeps before I even turned the key. And it came from the console. It was my new cell phone! I had left it under the arm rest and missed a call and the son of a b*?@# beeps when you've missed a call.

Funny thing is I'm not even mad. I'm just glad the car is ok!! But I did pop the hood and reblock the EGR again...

LOL ... not laughing at you, but with you. I can't tell you how many times I've panicked because my car was making a strange noise only to find out that it was coming from the radio, the truck next to me, my cell phone (not the ringer, but the vibration) or something sliding around the floor somewhere. I remember one time parking it at a cafe during the summer and hearing the most grotesque idle I could imagine. I sat there for a couple minutes listening, and just as I was about to pop the hood, I noticed a guy with a leaf blower. For whatever reason, the noise of the blower happened to be in the right synch with my idle to make it sound like it was all the car. Gosh, did it feel good to turn the engine off and STILL hear the ugly noise!

thats pretty funny. i have become very adept at understanding the noises my old benz makes.

parking in the hoods of atlanta is tough though - you can never tell if its you that just leaked that 5 qts of oil, or the last guys caprice classic. drives me nuts when i back out of spaces...
