Glow plug headache
Two glow plugs in my 1999 turbodiesel appear to have become one with the engine. I have soaked them for 2 months with PB blaster and they still don’t budge. One came part way out then broke off. I tried drilling it out and using an easy out on it. The easy out just spit the end of the plug open making impossible to run a drill straight down the center. I did get out one that was stuck by using a light weight impact wrench on it and just let it run for several minutes while it came out up to the end of the threads. I started the engine to blow it the rest of the way out. (Don’t do this at home) You will never knew just how much pressure there is in a combustion chamber until you do this. The plug shot out like a bullet.
So my question is, does the head have to come off and go to a specialist? Will the check engine light go out when the plugs are all good again? For now I am just driving it with two inoperative glow plugs. The glow plug light and check engine light are bright enough to eliminate the need for a map light. |

I drilled mine out - see http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=109101&highlight=glow+plug+drill
I first drilled enough of the threads on the glow so that I could pick away any threads attached to the head. Then caught the rest of the glow plug on a drill bit. Others haven't been as lucky.
