wipers died on my 300D

I was driving in light rain last night and turned off my wipers and the passinger side stopped in the straight up position. I turned them back on and the drivers side went up and also stopped straight up (the pass. side didn't move). They would not do anything after that. I pulled over and was able to easily rotate the passinger side down but the driver side will not move. If I turn the key on and off the driver side will "pulse" but not really move much. With the key on no position of the washer control will get any movement from either washer blade, even if I push in for washer fluid (sprays fluid fine just no movement of the blades). I had no time to check into this problem but will dive into it tomorrow, just thought I would post here incase this sounded familiar to anyone on the forum. The car is a 84' 300D.

Thanks,

Mike

I would look at the linkage which you access by removing the air intake grills. There are some small square pins that you drive through (retrieve later), I use a small nail set to tap them through, there are, I think, four per side. Sounds like your wiper motor linkage came adrift.

The wipers sit on a rotating armature- the wiper arm may have gotten loose and now the armature moves but the wiper arm does not. Or the wiper regulator (the mechanical parts that takes the movement from the electrical motor and transform it to the rotating armature) may have need of service. That means it's broken. The wiper arm's base "flips" up at the non wiper end to reveal the 10 mm nut that holds the arm onto the armature. My SEL wipers just needed service and it turned out to be the wiper regulator. I learned all about the system then. If you need parts, I can get all of them from the junkyards here, or you can find them online from a worldpac dealer. Rusty at Buy MB parts is usually the cheapest, Phil at Fastlane is the sponsor here.

Update

I removed the plastic covers and the metal one. The short "arm" on the passinger side popped off and was lodged against the metal. I was able to return it to it's proper location. I don't know what actually holds it on to the shaft, I bought a E clip and put it on but I don't think it will hold long term. The driver side has no clip but wont come off, is there a clip or cap I need to purchase?

Thanks,

Mike

On my '82 240, I replaced the entire linkage, as what had failed appeared to have been pressed on, mushroom like. I recently purchased the square retaining clips from the stealership for a whopping 88 cents each.

Thanks tomany MBZ,

I think you are right, The driver side seemed to be rounded over (mushroomed) with no retaining clip. I think my fix is probably only temporary.
