Question 300D Electrical Problems

Just got a 1985 300D with only 164K miles on it. It is mint! However, I just had my first set back. Got up to go to work and discovered I suddenly have no turn signals, no cruise control, no tach, no fuel guage, no temp guage, and the windows don't work. This seems totally bizarre to me. Everything but the window controls is in the dash or steering column. The window controls however are in the middle console.

I have checked fuses (all good), and removed the under dash panel to eyeball for loose connections (none visible). The car runs fine otherwise. Still have speedometer, lights, wipers (all in dash/steering column as well). Battery seems to be charging too.

Does anybody have a clue as to what might be wrong? These systems have all been operating without problems for weeks (since I bought the car). Must be something big to affect all those systems at once.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Philip

I think you have a major grounds problem

Since you indicate all these items failed at the same time, I'd say you have a major ground connection failure. There are a number of ground cables on the car, negitive battery post to body, engine to body, starter ground and of course behind the dash gauges all the grounds from electrical uses in the dash come together in one big group. I would start by checking each ground and make sure that the connection is clean, (no rust or grease) and very tight. I would really check all the grounds around the engine and battery before I would pull the instrument panel to check those.

Re: 300D Electrical Problems

Well I'm almost embarrassed to admit, but it was indeed a fuse. The fuse wasn't blown, however, it was fractured. I could not see this on visual inspection. It wasn't until I took a volt meter and started going through the fuse box that I found the culprit.

Thanks for the tips.

Philip
