could be anywhere from 500 to 5000 depending on condition.

try to get it as cheaply as possible. generally, a non running car will not bring much.

if you can provide more information and detail we can offer more accurate estimates of value.

Based on what you said, I'd offer no more than $700 just because its not running and has 300k. Also, you can't test the vacuum system unless its really tight and there's vacuum left in the system - at least the door locks.

Playing contra bida, how do you know the engine will run when an alt is installed? And how about the rest of the components that rely on a running engine?

Exactly, can't test the brakes, transmission, many electrics, drivetrain, blowby...
It's a pig in a poke. Pay accordingly.

Is it a wagon or a turbo diesel sedan? Will it start? It's fairly uncommon for the alternators to go out on these cars. So I wouldn't be surprised if its something else.

If the alternator is bad it probably needs a battery to start. You should be able to put a battery in it and be able to start it up. Then you can atleast make sure the engine it good. Then its drivable. You could also just low ball them if it doesn't start.

If it's a wagon and won't start I would pay more than $1000 for it. If its a turbo sedan and won't start I go for the $500-$700 range.

Well I've got a 82 300TD which is a beater on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-300-Series-300TD-1982-300TD-Wagon_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6330QQitemZ320092564568QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW The parts that are inportant are solid again, but the back bottom of the doors still need work or if you can find better doors..... Engine leaks a large amount of oil and it seems to be in one spot. Tranny is great. Who knows with the nice weather I may repair it and get more. Just need to sell something soon to pay for the new toy/gift.

Thanks for the replies. I'm only considering if it is running and in good shape and the owner will consider a trade for my 91 300te. He would have to come up with some $ on the trade as I have put a lot of work into the 300te. I have about $4500 in it. It rus terrific now. Looks good too. If you know anyone who may be interested please let me know.

more info to help determine value:

The AC does not work. The heat works very well.

Vacuum locks do not work. Rear wiper doesn't work. Passenger side mirror
needs to be reseated/adjusted. Power stearing pump needs gasket for cover.
Power stearing fluid escapes because of missing gasket. It leaks oil but
I've been told that a new oil pan gasket should fix problem.

The driver's seat is slowly loosing the horse hair filling.

Other than normal wear and tear, the car is in pretty good shape for its age
and mileage.

I had the suspension pretty much replaced when I first bought the car. I
spent around $3000.00 on initial repairs.

I have all the records that came with the car when I bought it as well as
all of the work that I have had done.

This was taken from an email by the seller. Does this help give a more accurate value of this car?

I may take a visible crack at this one, and help you with it's value.
You've got email.

You dont need an alternator to take the car for a test spin. Worst case scenario you cut the alt belts if its frozen. With 3k in susp work that probably include SLS and if the SLS has been recently worked on that car is a keeper if your willing to DIY the vacuum etc. If its got third row seats buy it assuming it runs, stops. and turns.

Drove my beater wagon for about 2 monthes without an alternator. Just put the charger on it every other day. Its tricky though as its hard to judge when there isn't enough juise to turn the starter over. Always had cables for jumpen which I used a few times also, even carried the extra battery. Life was a little hectic at the time.
