Talking Just bought a diesel (1991 350SDL)

Hi,
A couple of days ago a nice 1991 350SDL went on ebay.Surprisingly,it was for sale in my neighborhood.Went over today to check it out,and it turns out people from NJ and the other side of PA were on there way to see it as well.It was really nice and had 135,000 miles. It was mint. The car is a midnight blue over grey leather. The lower cladding has been repainted a lighter shade of blue, rather then the grey.I think the blue actually looks nice.I had the same blue over grey on my 1988 560SEL,except I had grey cladding. The car was powerful, and surprisingly quiet. Its a 2-owner.I am picking it up on monday.

Congratulations, the 1991 is a great year. Did you do your homework? I love the 1991s, but the 350 engine has it's issues. I really do hope, however, that you got a good one. It sounds nice - post some pics.

I saw one listed on Ebay recently and they said it was one of 816 made (or something like that--I just remember a low number). Is that true? It does seem odd that with such a limited number of the cars out there, that there's a whole bunch showing up lately. But I will say this: When I was first in the market for a diesel Benz, the first one I drove was one that sounded just like this one. 91, 130k miles, ran real strong, quiet, powerful -- quicker than my Camry which surprised me from a diesel. I really got that holy crap look on my face when I pulled out of the driveway and hit the pedal to the floor--it was fast. 8k is what they wanted. If I wasn't married and didn't have to get my big ticket items "approved", I would have bought it on the spot. Thankfully during the time of getting approval, I started research on this forum. Decided it wasn't worth the risk. But if that 350 works out for you, I'd be jealous. It is a really nice car.

I did some research on the forum, prior to even looking at the car.The car seemed really well maintained and it had actually zero wear on the seats (especially the drivers).I was actually looking specifically for a 1995 E300,but expanded my search to 1994-1995 e320's.I was about to buy a 1994 E320,but decided not to.I really like the W126's and have owned many of them (300sd,380se,300sdl,a couple 420sel and a couple 560sel's).
I too saw the one with the ad saying there were about 900 or something 350's.That was an ad for a 350SD.

That is the ebay link for the car that I bought.Let me know what you think.

"618 350SD's made for the United States". That number was taken from the latest issue of the Star magazine in one of their latest articles. 615 SWB S-Class diesels were made for '91, and 3 for 1990 apparently.

Although since the authors data was grossly inaccurate at times, I have reason to doubt even that claim (despite the fact I almost never see a 350SD and I live in an area that has a relatively high concentration of W126s).

Do you know the rear legroom difference between the 350SDL and SD?The long wheel base W126's are huge in the back like the W140's.

Congrats on your purchase. It is a beautiful example of a W126. Enjoy, and keep us posted.

Thanks!
I plan on adding Mercedes mud-flaps and have one of those leather key-chains that came with the car new.Does anyone know if mud-flaps that would fit a 1979-1985 W126 would fit this 350SDL?

article in the Star also and there may be some truth to the number 618. On the one occassion I had my 350SD into the dealership, a Service Advisor who owns a diesel told me a similar number and he went on to say there were only a few hundred made like mine, black on black. They also have no record of another 350SD in the state of Colorado. Hard to know what to believe, but I haven't seen one yet.

Nice find. That's definitely one of the cleanest ones I've seen, and I had been looking through many 350's until I settled on the Jetta TDI.
I also read that article in The Star, interesting how insurance paid for his complete motor replacement, also interesting how he installed all those little electronic things...

Semi off-topic, but speaking of rare car sightings I was passed yesterday by a tan '99 E300 turbodiesel on I-5 S in downtown Sacramento; had there not been a Camry in front of me I would've given my E300 the kickdown and seen whose 606 was faster
