1984 Mercedes shifting problem, advice please!

Having major problems shifting, was wondering if anyone could help. Here is the case. Car drives fine at first, always! Then within anywhere from 2-20 minutes it will not shift properly. It was shifting to second, and I could throw it in neutral, then drive to reach 3rd. That doesn't work anymore. Lately it won't even let me get out of first gear. I am wondering if this is vaccuum related at all. Also wondering if the tranny fluid is generally so runny (this being the case why it works at first, untill it wamrs up???) I have checked the levels and everything. I'm wondering if I could drain the fluid myself? Any comments or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Fluid R'N'R is DIY, replace filter and gasket too. Must drain pan AND torque converter seperately. There could be vac problems aplenty, yet you might want to start with new fluid.

Welcome to the forum.

Can you kindly describe the symptoms of the problem to the best of your ability. Stating that it "won't even let me get out of first gear" doesn't assist in the diagnosis.

Reply with vehicle speeds and engine rpm information and what the transmission is doing........or not doing........at various operating points.
