Injector replacements?

Someone placed a post about using Diesel Purge to clean the injectors.

1) If you use DP, is that something you can put in your fuel tank, or do you have to hook the container up to your fuel filter, like shown from Diesel Giant?

2) When should injectors be replaced? I've heard the Italian Bozios or whatever they're called, are VERY good. I've heard of people talking about quieter engines and smoother running engines. I just started thinking, if they're not that much, maybe I should replace mine.

3) How hard are they to replace?

Thanks,

jeff 1991 300d, 103k

1. its best if used full strength as in directly hooked up not diluted in the fuel tank.

2. injectors should be replaced about every 50k thats what mercedes reccomends but to tell you the truth about every 80k or 100k is about the life of injector nozzles. the intalian nozzles are very good and will not disapoint you.

3. they arent hard to replace just tedious make sure you replace not only the injector nozzle but the heat shield also.

Dieselgiant.com has a very good guide for this.

1- Use the container like shown

2-Injectors should be replaced when they go bad.
The jury's still out on the Bosio nozzles. Nobody has run them for any siginficant length of time to determine if their a good replacement.
There were quality issues with the Bosch nozzles also. So make sure you know what your doing when replacing nozzles.

3-It's not hard at all to replace injectors.

I have NEVER seen any recommended replacement interval for injectors. Most can last the lifetime of the car with little or no maintenance. I suppose if you wanted to be conservative you could pull them every 50-100K and have them tested and cleaned but to replace them as maintenance items is something I've never heard of. A good shop can bring them back into spec if they test as having pop pressures being off or a less than ideal spray pattern. Replacements are far costlier than having them serviced.

The injectors in my '98 are original and have never been out of the engine and with 144K seem perfect. The car runs smoothly at every speed, gets good fuel economy and I don't plan on pulling them unless there's a reason to. I think that's the recommended path to take with them...attention when needed, not PM.

I agree 100% - there is NO recommended replacement interval for injectors and in my opinion many people change them out then when there is absolutely no need. The injectors on my 91 300D currently have 210K on them and the car runs perfectly, they were checked for pattern and opening pressure about 100K ago when I had the IP out for a re-seal. All injectors tested fine and I re-installed them without changing anything. Over the years I've had approximately 40-50 used injectors tested and I've found exactly two that needed new nozzles and another 3-4 that had lower than recommended opening pressure.

If you use good fuel and change your filters at reasonable intervals you have a much better than average chance of having the injectors last the lifetime of the car.

I have NEVER replaced injectors except at engine overhaul time. I had a set checked once. They just check for proper pop off pressure and see that they are spraying a good pattern. Injectors are definitely not a preventive maintenance item.
