Do I have the right primary fuel filter?

Double-checking before I change the primary filter on my 87 300D ... bought a filter from the dealership, and they seemed (as always) a little confused about what the right part was. The filter they gave me is part #001 477 66 01 and has the 90-degree bend in it. It is opaque white. The filter that is currently in my car is clearish, no bend and much wider girth (couldn't see a # on it). Are they interchangeable or did they give me the wrong filter? Thanks.

They more then likely gave you the proper filter. These filters are available at auto zone and vary form clear to opaque in color. yes the 90 degree bend is the gozzata, the straight part is the gozzinta.

If you're careful, you can replace this filter without having to bleed the fuel line. Simply hook the Gozzinta first and let the fuel flow till the filter is full, then hook up the gozzata. A little air bubble in the filter is OK.

For some strange reason, every one I've changed has a phillips on the gozzata and a slotted hose clamp on the gozzinta.

You OEM filter when the car was new had the bend in it (or, at least mine did)

You have the proper filter. Only problem is it's opaque; so you can tell (without pulling it out) if it's clogged.

Your fuel lines should bend enough to install it, and be sure the right clamps are used (no regular hose clamps, as they'll carve thought the rubber) I also recommend a piece of plywood under the car, or even cardboard (some will drip) I would also cover the engine mount or whatever rubber pieces are nearby, you don't want fuel on them.
