Old fashoned series-glow-plugs, and a Great OM-615...

Ive just traded 5 gallons of my best BioDiesel for a great OM-615.397, 2.2L engine, complete with all pumps, alt. starter etc. I reckon it maybe came from an early W114 or 206 van as it has the early type replaceable 'element' type fuel-filter, and a very large screw-down oil filler cap .....

As the glow-plugs were faulty, I had great fun trying to start it to confirm its condition, as it had been under a work-bench covered in saw-dust for around 20 years, After allowing 50cc of engine-oil to soak through each injector-hole to lube-up the bores for a couple of days and periodically turning over by hand, as well as changing the 'stuff' that passed for oil in its sump, and a few other silly things like flushing through the IP with nice clean BioDiesel with a new Bosch fuel-filter I was ready to start it....

It took around 1/4 can of WD-40 into its air-intake while turning over before coughing into smoky life (I prefer to use WD-40 rather than 'Easy-Start' Ether based sprays as Ive seen the results of a mis-hap with that stuff -WD-40 may take longer to get an engine going, but is Much safer )....

As I had jury-rigged up a radiator and oil-cooler I left it run for half-hour or so, at around 1500 rpm after which it ran pretty clean and very quiet considering no exhaust system was fitted, with no clattering from the cam-box or anywhere else. There was no appreciable 'blow-by' from the cam-box breather-pipe, just a very small amount, about the same smoke as a lit cigarette would make, so I guess the rings/bores are pretty good. Its oil-pressure measured by connecting a complete W123 speedo/instrument cluster to, was just under the pin at idle after 15 mins running and at 2.25 bar after half hour The oil-pan was pretty hot to the touch after 15 mins and even hotter (But not too hot!) after half-hour, so no problems with bearings either ....

It has those strange old-fashoned series-wired glow-plugs. I would like to replace these with the later pencil/sheathed type, as they are All faulty (Not sure why all are gone though, although I suspect the engine had its originals 'robbed' as they were all loose )

Apart from needing a valve-setup job, and a timing-chain for good measure (around 4-5 degree 'stretch'/wear) and remove the oil-pan to steam out the remains of whatever was sitting in there for 20 years...

It would appear to be a great engine, which Ill probably use in my W123 Wagon untill I re-build my aged and tired OM-617, although it will be pretty sluggish with only 2.2L 62BHP....

Any idea what part-number/make of plug will fit, or are there adaptors to use a standard type plug in the much larger hole?
.

On the later *07 vans the 616 oil filter housing pointed backwards and down beside the bellhousing. Did the 615 do the same thing in a van?

I think it probably did, as the front-suspension beam would have been in the way, I Think...

The 615 I have has a smaller oil-filter similar to the type used on the M110, mounted downwards, at a slight angle, and positioned just under the rear of the IP..
