The compressor should be adjustable.

You loosen the 3 bolts to the compressor, and there is a 10mm nut on a post on the driver's side of the compressor.....

You have the GM POS R-4 compressor. That belt has to be tight, or it will get noisy.

Remove the belt(s) and turn all pulleys by hand and ensure that they turn smoothly. If so, replace the belt and adjust it tight with about 1/2" of slack at its longest run. If you find a rough turning pulley fix it.

before you totally give up on the a/c, don't forget you need a/c for the defrosters/defoggers to work properly too!
it's really pretty simple to adjust the belt on these cars. loosen the three back bolts, then tighten up the adjuster bolt adjacent to the pulley, tighten the three bolts back up. Whoila! quiet belts. John

no, you will have heat, and defrosters.
but the a/c makes the defogger/defroster work MUCH better. John

The AC compressor takes the humidity out of the air, thus allowing it to defog your windshield. Often times just outside air through the vents fogs it up that much worse.....
