Cool Find At Junk Yard Today...

Well ill first say i don't post alot because im really just getting into the whole 80's Benz scene...

Last year i got a free rusted out 85 300TD wagon from a friend and i haven't turned back since.

The wagon is long gone, It was stripped down to the bare frame and everything else is that was in decent shape is in the attic.

Then about a year ago this weekend my dad and I drove to Florida and came back with a 84 300D with a very tiny amount of rust. Since then it has been in storage because of the paint and just not wanting to take it out in the Wisconsin winter with all the salt, its now out and being used when it will start when its warmer.

Ill be seeing alot more of this place as i start to restore the 300D we bought in Florida.

Anyhow now that i have told that story ill get to the reason i made this thread...

We go to the junk yard every maybe 6 weeks to get random trinkets treasures and more for the Benz and to sell on ebay...

On the way out of the yard today i stopped at a 300CD that wasn't where it should have been, So i called my dad over to come and take all the usual parts we take off cars to buy and i hop in the front seat to find the manuals and other goodies you find in the glove box.

I found a folder and opened it up to find a load of service papers about half a ream thick and a autographed picture of Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac with a note from the "Forum Hotel London" that said:

Quote:
Car originally owned by
Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac)
*Her adress in Beverly Hills CA*

sold to an employee, then several
other owners--in Arizona until 1990

Here are some pics, I edited out the address just in case she or someone still does live there and doesn't want the address out.

Anyhow, Gata do some searching on if certain parts will work with my car and such and find out how to install this in line heater we took off a car today to.

Not sure, I don't think this guy would have a problem selling the car if the price was right.

In all reality even tho the car is beat up as it is with a couple dents i think would it be worth saving?

I took the euro headlights out today along with a few other pieces atleast i think they were euro headlights...

BTW its a 1978

I'd say it's worth restoring, if it really has the celebrity status. Go through the service records, to see if there is more evidence the Fleetwood Mac singer (They were Pres. Clinton's favorite band) had the car. Interesting if Christine McVie chose a
diesel Bruce Mendel here sold a 560SEC AMG coupe that was owned by a member of Crosby Stills & Nash, another famous rock group of the time, I think the car belonged to Steven Stills

From your pictures, I would say it is a Euro car, because of the plastic black roof wind deflector; those were common accessories on the euro 123s but NOT in the USA. If you pulled the euro lights off the car, that's further evidence it was a Euro car, though not conclusive. What is the VIN#? That will tell you whether it was a euro car for sure

What tells if its a euro model in the vin?

Just looking on the Number 2 data sheet thats glued in the maintenance book

I did some searching and i have a feeling its the first 6 numbers? Also i dont know if because its a 78 there will be any issues because of the whole after 1980 the VIN lookup.

Anyhow heres whats on the tag, 123150 -- ------ All numbers no letters.

Help at all?

Send the vin to the Mercedes classic center and they should be able to confirm the original owner (they won't tell you, but I think they will confirm it if you guess correctly). They will also tell you where it was delivered. If it's the real deal Buy it!

It is easy to say to restore that car. It would be another thing to actually do it! Now, maybe for Stevie Nicks, but Christine? Naw........

Any chance you grabbed that wind deflector from the sunroof??

You also ought to grab that aux fan if it isn't seized. Folks need those all the time.......

Oh, what kind of shape were those sheepskin seat covers in?

Is there a vin on the drivers A piller?
Pre 1980 there was no "VIN" only the cars "serial number" which in MB terms pointed toward the build of the car not a "unique"number. Is the center console all wood or are the buttons at the top on plastic? Is there a beam vert adjustment switch? The rear bumper, does it mount on 2 or 1 bolt? Euros only have one bolt per side from the factory.

I agree with everyone else that car is salvagable imo. You wont get big bucks for it but its worth value to the right buyer and thats priceless.

Sorry Jim, not a euro. First hint is bumpers, second is that the CD was never sold it Europe, it was a US only car. Another easy give-away, as in his pictures is the liscence plate mounting holes in the rear body panel. As you see they are further apart (from bumper to trunk) and narrower (between tail lights).

Any chance you can grab that sill on the passenger door (below the windo)? I need one for my coupe.

Cool find. Parts request.....

If you can't buy it outright, I would love to have the First Aid kit in the back window for my 123.

just PM me & I'll send you what you ask for it & postage.

Thanks! Austin

If the sunroof air deflector is still available I would buy that as well.
