Angry Did someone throw acid on my car?

Went out to my car today and this is what I found.

All the paint is gone in some area, even went thru the primer.

How could this have happened? Besides a possible ex-girlfriend getting revenge from a recent breakup, who has the chemicals to do this?

I talked with a car wash owner and he said it could have possibly been soda, but I can't imagine soda being able to get thru clearcoat, paint and primer that fast.

Any idea how this was done?

Do you think I could paint this myself by wetsanding the panel below the pin strip and above the molding on the door? I read that you can go to NAPA to get the paint matched to your fuel door and they will put it in a spray paint bottle.

Ouch.

Here in Boston a common vandalism technique is to use acid to etch graffiti into storefront windows. It looks like you have been hit by this somehow...

Its not soda, you need some burly stuff Id think to get through automotive exterior paint...

That looks like brake fluid to me. Maybe ever paint stripper.
If you want it to look good your going to need to take it a body shop.

It looks more like a paint-stripping gel than brake fluid to me. Brake fluid is highly viscous, so it would have run down the door pretty quick. A gel-type paint stripper would have had time to sit on the vertical surface and start bubbling.

That's deliberate. I'm putting my money on the girlfriend. Sorry.

i bet its the ex.. at first i thought it was brake fluid, but the way the paint was peeling off and bubbling, it was either paint stripper/remover or hydrochloric acid which is a little harder to find but acessable nonetheless

Yeah, I'm starting to believe it was my ex-girlfriend.

1. She always kept on saying that I loved my car more than her.

2. She's a dentist, I'm sure she's got some wicked chemicals that she could have smeared on it that would strip that paint.

Well, I guess she got her revenge. To bad I'm not a revenge kind of guy b/c I see her car parked around here all the time.

Time to call the cops. If you suspect the ex, name her in the report. She will get questioned. A plus is that if anything else happens, she will be looked at first.

A guy I went to high school with had a custom painted 65 chevy p/u. A rival school came by and they vandalized a bunch of stuff, including his truck. They poured nail polish and nail polish remover on it. The rival school ended up paying for the damages.

That's totally paint stripper. $9.95 a can at WalMart or any hardware store. I'll bet your ex still has the can in her trunk, or check the dumptsers nearby your and her places, it'll be there. Hell hath no fury... :fork_off:

Is it me, or is there something written there? From left to right looks like a word starting with S.

That does look like writing. Get a sample of the ex's handwriting. A lot of times there are simularities when trying to write something is invloved.

Seems odd as an act of revenge. Is she had a spray can of stripper, why do just a small area? Why not do both doors, the fenders, hood and trunk, it would be much more $$$$ Any evidence of similar problems with other cars on the street or houses, garages in the vicinity?

Is it just me, or does that writing spell out the ol' SOB ? Probably just on that door (which is next to the drivers door of the car next to it) because "whoever" did it was in a hurry and nervous.
