Rear View Mirror Removal

Got a new mirror to replace my original that has a shot ball joint.

All I can say is that this thing is REALLY in there. Should I be
yanking longitudinally (front to rear) or laterally (side to side)
to get this sucker out?

Pull it rearward, away from the windshield.

It is actually designed to release forward, but don't smack it into the windshield!!.

Yah, just yank it out of the ceiling..... (My dad and I spent almost ten minutes trying to figure out your exact dilemma at the junkyard yesterday! )

OK, I yanked. Got the mirror out. Ripped the mounting plate out of the roof along with it.
Broke the two front screws in half, and pulled the rear screw out of the sheet metal.

Oh well, went to Home Depot and got #6 x 3/4 sheet metal screws and the
mounting plate is back in along with my new mirror.

What an ordeal.

Take a flat blade screwdriver from the side and tap it with a hammer. This releases one side of the spring clip

I put a box in my car, and it popped the mirror off it's ball, I tried to pop it back on, and the arm came right out of the roof... no damage, but it sure is hard to get back on the ball...
