agressively pursuing purchase 1979 240D

Hey, I found a 1979 240D, surprisingly close to me, located in Kansas. At the present time, I am in "heavy" negotiations with the owner on a purchase price! Mechanically very sound, had a 80,000 mile motor installed from a 1981 240D within the last year. Used as a daily driver. Cracks on the dash, is about the only problem with interior. Front left fender has been replaced in the past due to rust problems. The only visible rust on the car is a couple of small places on the edge of the trunk, where it shuts(no big problem to repair, just bubbling the paint a little bit. Here's a few pics.

check out all the components underneath carefully for problems.

good luck on your purchase.

Try this

Was kind of small, perhaps these are better! Just heard from the owner, it's a done deal! Will pickup tomorrow! Yes, a manual tranny, just what I have been looking for.

Great!!! It will be good to hear more. You really looked hard for a car at the right price, and you found one close to home. Those are good cars, the 123 240D manual. It was Mercedes most basic car, but still built with the cost no object engineering and quality standard, which you might not get on a new $125,000 Mercedes today.

Nice car Coadman! Luvs me some Hubbies! I can't wait to see interior pics. I really like the interior on the '79 and earlier W123's. Those welded seams really seem to hold up well, and you can't beat the pointed head rests!
We not only want pics, but bigger pics!
Congrats....

I haven't figured out how to make the pics bigger? When I try to make them bigger, I get message they are too big for transfer, so I have to continually downsize to get them to work. I'm always open for suggestions? Here are some more, I'll try again

Well, picked up the Benz and drove it about 70 miles back to my home this afternoon. It really rides and drives extremely nice! I didnt get my back windshield splattered with bugs either!(lol) I will have to repair the drivers seat, it really wasnt that uncomfortable, but could tell it needed a little padding. When I got home and opened the back door, you could see quite a bit of horsehair that was hanging out underneath the seat. I also inspected the engine more thoroughly and had some questions. I am going to try and enclose a picture of a pump at the front of the motor. I'm assuming it is a powersteering/hydraulic pump of some type. Anyway, when looking down at the belt, I cannot imagine how that thing stays on. The pulley on the pump and the one down below are not lined up, and the belt is running crooked. Is this normal? I can't see any adjustment on the pump for alignment, so thought I would ask?

Another observation, although the motor ran very well coming home, when it was setting in the yard, and I was watching the motor, it seemed to hesitate occasionally, like missing out on an old gas motor does sometimes. I see there is a little fuel seepage along the front injector(am enclosing picture),and from reading in the past on here, could sucking a little air cause this intermittant hesitation? Also, if I remember correctly, there is a copper/brass bushing/washer that can be installed to solve this problem? I also unscrewed the oil filler cap and let it set on the valve cover loosely, and it really "percolates", even was spitting some oil out a bit, but I dont notice any smoke in the exhaust upon startup or driving.
Jim

Oh, also, look what I found in the trunk!

Sounds like a good banger with minor maintanance stuff to do.

If it came with the triangle and trunk mount, it may have been bought in Germany, driven a bit and imported to USA.

Like my 300D with the euro trunk mounted triangle...

Some more observations I found out this evening. The speedometer works, and probably pretty accurate as to not being passed by many people on the way home!(lol) But, the odometer does not work. That is one thing I probably need to get repaired, less I wont be very accurate with my oil changes. I did some searches on here about odometer problems, and followed a link to "diymbrepair", and it had a rather thorough explanation with pictures how to take out the instrument cluster and troubleshoot the odometer. Has anyone done that procedure, and how did it turn out? Also, according to the PO, he recently put in a new battery, and battery cables, plus another alternator not too long ago. I took the car for a drive this evening to check some other items out, and noticed the alternator light dimly lit when I slow down or come to a stop. It never gets bright like it does when I just turn the key on, but it is dimly lit. Is this normal for the car(I would think not) or do I need to investigate his alternator, battery, etc? Oh, another thing, what type of oil pressure should I be running? When I first start the car it is up around 30 and when I drive it, it is almost maxed out, is this where it should be?
thanks,
Jim

Put a post with that picture in the "Trunk Triangle thread" in Diesel discussion!
They are a nice little extra to have on the car.
