OEM Euro Headlight cleanup
On the one good headlight I rec'd, I noticed the metal shield in front of the H4 bulb is covered with a chalk like sustance. It was dropping powder with every little move. I'm assuming it's paint turned to ash, as I've seen newer cars with the flush mount lights (that were wrecked), the shield was black.
The one in front of the fog reflector has some black to it and some surface rust. Any input on high temp black paint I can use? Thanks!

Mine is like that too, but I was just going to leave it. You could use some of the 1200 degree BBQ paint.

Cool, I'll give that a shot. I already have the one out of the reflector and sanded down. Looks like the fog light will have to stay the way it is since I cant seem to remove it.

You can get high temp exhaust manifold paint from walmart for 5 bucks too.

Exhaust manifold paint...good idea. I wonder just how hot those lamps get...

Nearly every auto parts store around here carries high-temp spray paint in 500F and 1200F.
Brush-on BBQ paint is also an option. I prefer the 500 degree F ceramic paint for applications like that. I've used the 1200 degree F ceramic paint on things in the past, but the curing process is annoying, unless you plan to remove the shield and toss it in the oven. 500F is 260C, which is right about the operating temp of the outside of a tungsten bulb. Halogens run a bit hotter, but that's on the surface of the bulb, and the shield is quite a ways away. I would think you are safe with 500F paint. I always assumed that white substance was just corrosion on the metal due to moisture in the lamp itself. I didn't see any traces of black paint on the main headlight shields for either set of w123 ecodes, and only one set of my Volvo ecodes have the shield painted (out of four different sets/ designs).
