Question 1983 W123 interior front dome light

Is it possible to substitute a front dome light for a 1982 240D for the 1983 240D front dome light? I don't require a timer delay.

Thanks.

John

John- as long as they are the same size they interchange. Some later w123's have the larger dome light- and those do not fit.

Thanks. I'll measure and check with Phil. My current dome light works in both on positions, but does not turn off with the time delay. Is there a trouble shooting procedure? I have sprayed electronic cleaner in the unit without results.

I may be wrong but I dont think the w123 has a delay timer. It's all off/ all on/ or on when the doors are open.

Mine is supposed to have a timer delay and a switched on according to the manual. Regardless, it does not turn on and off with the door switch.

My '84 CD has a delay dome light. Can't find timer on wiring diagram.

My 83 W123 has the dome light delay (my 82 does not). The timer is part of the buzzer relay that's under the drivers dash. On my 240D, I had to fix a burnt connection in the relay box to make the delay work. It looks like this:

The Service Manual shows that the time delay unit is locted in the front dome light and switch assembly. Not in the warning module.

Click on the "buy parts" at the top and go to your cars year and model the light assembly is available from Phil. It's $54.00

A side note. If the two lights are the same size it could be possible to install the dimming light into a non dimming light car. The dimming light has a 4 wire connector. But the 4th wire is the supply to the illuminated mirrors in the visors. So with a little wire harness change this might work. This all depends in the lights are the same size or if the older W123's could be modified. If my daughters car were here I could measure them, but alas she's at college studying hard. Or at least I hope so!!

I bought a late 240D dome light because my Shlomo's cracked right by the switch wherever it wanted to hang out of the ceiling if it were jostled.

It wouldn't fit my opening, so it's in my spare parts bin(the trunk ) and you may have it if you wish-- Pull A Part only charged $1.00 for it.

dome llight size

According to Roy, an '82 dome light without the timer delay has the same dimensions as the '83 dome light. Hopefully I can reconfigure the connector to work.
