Black Oily Substance at Exhaust Joint

Forgive the lack of proper terminology, but...

In the middle of the exhaust pipe, about halfway down the length of the car, there's a joint of some sort. And around that joint there's a black, oily substance which I just recently noticed. I suppose this might be motor oil (turbo seals, valve seals, etc. that need to be replaced), but I have not been able to detect ANY drop in oil level on the dipstick. So....could the black stuff be soot mixed with moisture of some sort??

What are the possibilities? How would a tech be able to figure out what it is? Is there any cause to be concerned?

Thanks.

Probably just soot and condensation. I would not get too concerned about it if car is runnung good.

there are many byproducts of combustion, h2o is one of them, I would be more concerned about a possible exhaust leak rather than a bit of black schmegma on he exhaust pipe
