Thank you's
Just wanted to thank all who post solutions to problems on this forum. My '83 240D displayed the dreaded ignition cylinder lock without warning! After searching the thread, I utilized techiques posted in the help sections and was successful in removing the stuck cylinder and key!!! A new lock cylinder should be here tomorrow. Again, thanks to all who take the time to help those of us who aren't mechanically inclined.

Well John, which techniques actually free'd your cylinder so it could be removed?
We are a curious bunch here, and your thread will also nab future searchers.

techniques I used for locked ignition cylinder
The first technique was squirting liquid graphite into the cylinder and jiggling the key. I inserted it tip up and tip down without results. Then I used my Dremel tool to apply vibration to the cylinder with and without the key. Again, no effect in getting the key to turn. I tried turning the steering wheel and the key at the same time, again no luck.
At this point I was beginning the steering/ ignition lock removal technique described at dieselgiant.com. I had removed the bolts holding the steering column to the dash, disconnected the vacuum hoses(after labeling them) and buzzer wire from the ignition switch, and was just about to begin grinding the release button on the steering lock when I tried one more time to turn the key. UNBELIEVABLY the key turned to position two. I COULD SEE THE HOLE TO PUT THE PAPER CLIP IN!!! With the paper clip in place I was able to unscrew the collar and out popped the devil in the disguise of the cylinder lock. My new cylinder will be here tomorrow afternoon and hopefully my 240D will be back on the road! Lots of patience, prayer, and good fortune along with excellent advice of the forum members!!! Thanks again. John |

Good work John. I hope that only replacing the cylinder does the trick for you.
I say that because in my case I ended up having to replace the steering lock also soon after the cylinder was replaced. Years later, it all still works fine !!
