Will I still be allowed in the door?

In a 280CE? I just bought a 78 Coupe in pretty nice shape - wifey agreed to share a gasser with me for awhile and sell her Chevy off to eliminate the extra payment for me...unfortunately I have to also sell off the 300D for now and rejoin the oilburning kingdom at a later date...

I guess I could post on the other forum, but I like the dieselheads here better

Can't wait to pick up the 280 this week - maybe down the road it will be a candidate for a 617 conversion....anyone attempted it? (With a euro 5-spd I might be in heaven!)

John

W123 280 to OM-617...5

This is exactly what I'll be doing pretty soon to my M110 powered Wagon, but first plan to use a good OM-615, while I re-build my 617.....

I'll let you know how it goes...

By all accounts the car's original M110 gearbox will mate the OM.61x engine as the back-plates are the same part-number, but the drive-shaft may need attention due to differing lengths...

If you are going with a gasser, why not go all the way?

Drop in a turbocharged Chevy 350ci small-block.

That depends. If they have hydraulic lifters they aren't as bad.

If it's a MB engine you MUST have, do you think a turbo M100 would be better?

That's just me. If I own it, it HAS to be turbocharged.

That 280 is gonna cost you in gas, thats for sure. It will get about 1/2 the mileage of a 617 turbo. A couple people I've known that had 280's averaged around 12-13mpg...on premium! (currently 2.97 a gallon here) Thats one thirsty sedan you've got there. If I had one it'd only be my Pleasure/Sunday driver.

first tank 20mpg on regular

The first tank was 20mpg+ and that was running 75-80mph -my Chevy 2500HD gets about 12.5 around town back and forth to work (which is why I mostly drive the 300) so anything over 15 is OK.

Mine is the low compression M110 (177hp) and runs on Regular (87 RON) without pinging or any problem so far. (Owner's manual confirms the gas choice is OK)
