87 300SDL fuel path from trunk to IP

Hello,
Can anyone please explain to me the path the fuel takes for an 87 300SDL from the spin on fuel filter to the IP? There seems to be another (pump?) next to the lift pump. I am not sure what it is and would like to know.
Thank you.
A

fuel tank -> clear prefilter -> prime pump (thats the other pump you were asking about) ->diesel thermostat / heater -> main filter ->IP ->back to main filter via banjo bolt ->return to fuel tank

prime pump

a2T,
Thanks for the reply.
Does the prime pump = lift pump?
I just want to make sure.
Thanks

nope, the lift pump is that big huge leaky block with 6 metal fuel lines squiggling out of it.

the primer pump is the smaller thing under it directly upstream of the lift pump.

IIRC, lift pump costs $$$$$$$$$$, prime pump costs $$$$

conversion

a2T,
So do it go like this?

fuel tank -> clear prefilter -> prime pump (thats the other pump you were asking about) -> lift pump -> diesel thermostat / heater -> main filter ->IP ->back to main filter via banjo bolt ->return to fuel tank.
Just noticed you have a Frybrid conversion. This is why I am asking all these questions. I am trying to hook up my 2-3 port solenoid valves and wanted to make sure I am splicing the supply line in the correct place. Where did you splice the supply on your conversion? DO you have any pics on the Frybrid forum?
Thanks
A

If you are doing frybrid wvo install, you change the order a bit.

On diesel side, it goes :

1. diesel tank
2. main diesel filter inlet (you can ditch the clear prefilter)
3. out main diesel filter
4. into diesel thermostat (leave that routing same)
5. out diesel t-stat
6. intake solenoid valve
7. primer pump
8. lift pump
9. return thru banjo bolt on main diesel filter
10. return solenoid
11. diesel tank

On WVO side, it goes :

1. WVO tank
2. wvo heated filter
3. wvo final heat exchanger
4. intake solenoid valve
5. primer pump
6. lift pump
7. return thru banjo bolt on main diesel filter (BUT MAKE SURE TO PLUG HOLE IN BANJO SO YOU DONT CONTAMINATE DIESEL FILTER WITH WVO!!)
8. return solenoid
9. wvo tank

Now, for additional horsepower and wvo filter longevity, you will quickly find its not necessary to return ALL the WVO back to tank while running.

So you install a looped return like this :

After the return solenoid (step 8 in WVO instructions above), install a brass tee from mcmaster carr. one leg is the inlet coming out of return solenoid. one leg goes back to wvo tank, and the 3rd leg goes right back into the wvo filter housing. it takes a bit of opening/closing the tee to push all air out, while revving motor, but after a minute you get all air out of lines and now you close off tee so that all the return WVO is going straight back into heater wvo filter housing (after filter element). Works wonders for power, as the engine is drawing and returning much more fuel than its using.

And yeah, you can see some pics on my website - www.GruvenParts.com - go to whats in development section and read away. Ive got more pics of the whole thing if you need them just ask

picture

a2T,
Great info. I am just not 100% sure I am looking at the correct part.
Please look at a pic I took and numbered.
http://picasaweb.google.com/michaelrhedrick/WVO/photo#5050094494754107954

The order is in sequence.
1 prefilter
2 lift pump?
3 ?
4 goes to spin on filter

So does the 3 port go after #3?
Thanks for your patience and time.

2. is the fuel heater. two lines are hot coolant circulating thru it, two others are fuel in and out (don't get these lines mixed up or the result will be dire consequences!)
I can't see the other numbers!

numbers

#3 is in the shadow of a wire, but it connected to #2.
#4 is coming off #3 and is going into the spin on filter.
Is #3 the primer pump?
