Installed Stereo... now won't shutdown + no door locks
 

I must have knocked something loose. I know it's a vacuum problem. Please suggest some things to check.

1985 300D Turbo Calif Emissions.

I installed a stereo today. I had my hands up in the dash to unclip the stock speakers, and I pulled a lot of speaker and power wire through both the dash and the passenger side floor. I ran power cable and all the speaker wire into the trunk through the hole that had the black rubber grommet with the three or so lines running through it. I ran power into the interior through that black rubber gasket next to the battery.

Now it won't shutdown when I turn off the ignition. The door locks worked great this morning, but they're out too.

So before I run out and buy a mighty-vac, does anyone have a suggestion as to what I knocked loose? I couldn't find anything tonight. It's got to to be near the areas I was working in.

I spent all day putting in a nice stereo, and now I'll have to drive the Jeep to work in the morning:(

my guess would be a door lock line has been pulled loose. one problem with 20yo rubber bits is that they harden and crack...you may have broken a brittle elbow somewhere.

besides, you need a mityvac anyway... :smart:

And you can still drive the Benz. Just pop the hood when you get to your destination and manually kill it. It's not cool looking but it is effective.

And I also agree -- you need a Mityvac.

I'm starting to get my head around the vacuum system on this thing. From looking at the diagrams here I'll bet I pulled the fuel door unlock port free while messing with the hoses going into the trunk area.

Thanks for all the help, info, and answers on this forum. Diesel purge, italian tuneup, boost gauge, and controller. Tweaking my steering box adjustment was fun. It's been an interesting first month with the Benz. It wouldn't have happened without this site.

Working under the dash, I have accidentally knocked the vacuum lines loose that run from the ignition to the shut off valve. Check there first. If not that just look under the dash and see if you can find anything that has come loose. Buy a mityvac soon because it makes looking for vacuum leaks a lot easier.

Ditto on the ign switch vacuum. There are two vac lines that run into it.

FYI for future searchers...

It was one of the rubber T junctions next to the fuel door. One was disconnected. That has to be one of the nastiest places I've ever stuck my hand in this car. I think some diesel is getting on that rubber and melting it. Got black grime all over my hands, and the rubber feels slippery. I'll have to add those to my list of things to pick up at the parts place.

I'm still going to buy the mityvac next time I'm at HF.
