However, if the car has already been converted... the decision is largely made up for you. Trying to un-do a conversion requires massive time and effort, including removal of the compressor, flushing all the oil out, and flushing the evap, condensor, lines, and everything else multiple times. HUGE job.

It's actually not so much the R-134a that's bad, it's the awful PAG/POE oils required, which are very hygroscopic (absorb moisture), and also form acids when moisture is present. Worse yet, the moisture doesn't boil out under deep vacuum like it does with mineral oil. Anyway, I'd patch the leak, replace the drier, vacuum it for a number of hours, and re-fill with R-134a. It will probably be fine.

Yeah, I agree with you too, that's why I said if it's already been converted it's probably worth keeping it R134a then to go back to R12 again. I've owned 2 cars which were converted to R134a, a W108 and a W123. Neither AC worked well enough for me to be happy with them, so from here on out I'd rather buy a car with a non-functional R12 system that I can repair and keep R12 then deal with a R134a conversion.

I second the comment that converting back from 134 to 12 is a huge pia but in my opinion it is worth it if you do it yourself.

Yes... it's especially worth it if you live in a hot/humid area (i.e., southern or western US), or otherwise really need really good AC peformance. It doesn't seem to bother some people as much. Personally, I like good AC in my cars. BTW... window tint helps a LOT. I have dark tint on all my cars.

IF you want the HVAC to perform as designed, do not, do not, do NOT convert to R134. If you have an R12 system, leave it as an R12 system.

You will NOT be happy with the performance of the converted system, and you'll be even more unhappy when you encounter the reduced compressor lifespan.

Un-converting converted system (that is, going BACK to R12) is another matter, more of a case-by-case basis. I think it is worth doing if you live in the Southeast or Southwest.

Well 21 and 25*F temps over the weekend didn't faze the MB when starting and it rained all night last night and no leaks into passanger compartment or trunk.

My Tygon fuel lines came in today, so I will be doing the old replace the fuel lines tomorrow or Friday. May do a diesel purge while I am changing the lines.

The a/c parts, P/S filter, air filter and a few other assorted stuff should be here by Friday or Monday.

Champagine is what the wife calls it, I haven't looked up actual color name. I haven't looked for a color code either.

I had it at the local Dodge dealer and the MB tech drooled all over and it drew a crowd of the tech's. They commented on how the underside had no sign of any rust or gravel road abuse. We even noticed it had a new MB muffler with the stickers in place as did the shocks. We could fine no fluid leaks on the underside from engine or tranny after 4 days of driving it around town.

However I spotted upper PS hose weeping and the fuel line coming from the fuel tank was also seeping a small amount or it was PS fluid. I have new fuel lines going on tomorrow and the power steering hose is waiting for PS filter to arrive and me to go buy some PS fluid at AutoZoo to do that job.

So far the a/c is about a $300 fix, $8 for fuel line, and then just the cost of filters and oil & gear oil. I will end up with about $4000 in the car and it will be ready for a coast to coast trip or the 700 mile trip one way to Lansing MI area in about a month to a VW TDI (diesel) GTG where the little MB will be the "Belle of the Ball" for sure.

Looks like a beautiful car. When I got mine almost 3 years ago it had only 62,000km on it. It's also a 91 300D 2.5 and same colour, Smoke Silver (Metallic).

Front crank seal is leaking a bit now, going to get to that soon, and my AC was also retrofitted to R134a - I find the performance fine. The summer I drove it across the country it was 39 degrees C for a few days and it cooled the car no problem.

Well I found a 702 under the hood on the tag that is located on the radiator brace. Now if I was reporting a car this color leavig the scene of a crime I would not discribe it as anything but champaigne, (sp) if I discribed it as Smoked Silver Metallic car no one would look at this car. When I was describing it to the wife before I bought it or talked to the owner, I used Beige Metallic to discribe the color.

My neighbor who was with me when we spotted the car traded in his '02 Toyota Camray today and it was real close to same color, but had lot more nicks and bad spots in the paint then the 300D. This car seems to be in about the same shape as the average 4 or 5 year old car, maybe better.

Discovered today the front two windows are auto down and the aid kit is not in the car, but the tools in the tool kit are shinny new. Also the tires are 4 years old next week and have pretty even wear from just looking, I will measure the tread tomorrow to know for sure about how much tread life is left. My guess is about 5/32" or maybe more, but my tread gage will tell me for sure.

Not suure I was wondering same thing, I can hear it go down or up. I just haven't had a chance to check it out as yet, few other thing are ahead of the antenna.

I'm trying to decide if I should go with the same oil that was used in the past, 15w-40 Rotella or jump to the 5w-40 Rotella T synthetic.

Also got to find out if the car is wired for CD as the car has a CD exchanger radio. That might be a Christmas present for the wife.

Also need to find out if iit has traction control or the positrack differential.
Hey old navy
nice ride i have a 93 with 95k on it and i got it from the dealer they said to use mobil delvac. good luck

Just got back from a nice midnight run to my favorite 47 cetane fueling center, it is a 102 mile round trip by the way. I like driving to the spot to just get the vehicles warmed up and cobs blown out of them. Anyway the little MB went 512 miles and required 18.2 gallons of fuel, and yes I had been running a ways with the LFL on. That is roughfuly about 27 mpg which I am well pleased with. All the miles except 102 were town driving, short trips and lot of idle time while doing coolant system flush and a/c repair.

Speaking of a/c repair I am happy to report the car blows cold air and all vents and controls function as they should. I would rate the a/c about like the wife's Jeep, but not as good as my Magnum. The Magnum will get cold enough to hang meat in if you want.

Also discovered that the car has both front and rear fogs and I believe Euro head lights from the excellent light pattern. I have all interior and dash lights functioning as they should, except center vent light marker. The OEM radio is in excellent shape and the tape player will really rock the car will doing 70 mph down the highway

The car is a real rocket since I cleaned the fuel screen, and replaced all the old vacuum tube connctions with new silicon tubing. It was rather pricy (80 cents a foot), but the stuff is good from -15*F to 500*F and does not rot and crack like the black rubber vacuum line does.

Life is good.
