Bringing a 300SD back from the dead
Long story short, I got burned on eBay deal, and ended up with a 1984 300SD that's been sitting at a friend's house on the East Coast for the past two years.
It started and ran, albeit poorly, for a while, then died and had to be towed. Never could get it started after that, though it did crank over. Had to come back home in a hurry with it still sitting there. Flash forward to now, and my friend is moving and wants his 'lawn ornament' gone. I've thought about just selling it off, or even scrapping it, but I'd much prefer resurrecting it. Problem number one is, I don't have the keys for it anymore - I've misplaced them somewhere, either at my house or in his garage, and they haven't turned up. Plan of attack is as follows: 1. Obtain a new set of keys if possible. Obtain a new lock cylinder if not, and plan on the pain of getting that thing out. 2. Fresh battery and charge it up. 3. Drain the old fuel, replace the fuel filters. 4. Pull the injectors and inspect/clean/repair them. 5. Replace the glow plugs, and make provisions to operate them manually if the relay's not working. 6. Open it up and adjust the intake and exhaust valves. 7. Drain the engine oil and replace it with a multigrade synthetic (probably 5W40). 8. Hook up a fuel can a la DieselGiant's purging setup, fill it up with Diesel Purge/Seafoam and prime the system. 9. Crank it up with fingers crossed. Questions: Am I missing anything important or obvious with this list? If the priming pump is shot, will pulling vacuum on the fuel return line work? Should I dribble DP/Seafoam/Marvel Mystery Oil into the engine with the injectors out, then crank it without the injectors mounted to flush the prechambers? Any help is appreciated!

If you do all that there should be no reason for it not starting if it ran before. I think it would be a good idea to dribble some Mystery Oil into the cylinders before cranking it over. I bet it will run fine after all that stuff is done to it. You may even be able to skip the fuel draining, diesel doesn't really go bad. The purge is a good idea as are the new filters and valve adjustment. How many miles on the engine? I bet it is able to be brought back to life. Go for it!
