w210 E300D Shock sleeve removal

Hey guys. I removed the OEM shock from the car and am going to install some newer shocks that I cam across, but don't have the sleeve and cup already installed @ the top of the shaft. How do I transfer the cup and protective sleeve from the old shock to the replacement shock?

You got to transfer essentially all old pieces from the old shock to the new shock unless the new shock has new pieces to fit.

Micha, I'd strongly recommend getting the new upper and lower rubber bushings from the dealer prior to re-installation...they're only a couple o' bux.

What shox are U installing?

Seconded. The bushings get pretty squashed from 100-200k miles use.

Hey guys... I did purchase the shock mounting kit. I've included pictures of the kit, stock shock and the replacement Shock.

The replacement shock is from an Eibach Pro-kit that I received when I purchased the E55 springs from a private party. The springs and shocks were used approx. just over 1 year on a '97 E420 (to the best of my and his knowledge). The replacement shock is about an inch shorter and much firmer when pressing down trying to compress it over the stock shock.

I'll take pix when installed, but I gotta figure out how to get that protective sleeve off first, and treat the cleaned metal and surface rust with the Eastwood Rust Converter

that sleeve can be a serious PIA to remove if it's crushed or deformed a little...ask me how I know

I can suggest spraying some penetrating oil and then grabbing the sleeve with pliers/channel locks and keep rotating it 'til it comes off. Don't have any other recs for that one.

I'll be curious to hear how this setup is and hope the ride height is acceptable. I've wrapped up my Eibach/KONI adj. install this past weekend.

Ok, so the metal top portion should simply slide up and off and thte plastic sleeve right behind it? It doesn't appears to be deformed at all, but then again this is my first time ever doing this... I am able to spin that metal cup above the sleeve with the shock shaft still and nothing happens, other than spinning in place.

I'm soo close yet so far

Yes, refer to part #5 in my diagram. That sleeve must be removed (pulled straight off, my need to be turned to remove) before the big plastic sleeve + bump stop can be removed.

Took another look and I have sprayed the bottom of the threads w/ WD-40 as an attempt to twist this metal sleeve off has proved futile. I will let the WE-40 hotness penetrate and I will try again later...
