Need IP for my 87' 300d

Hey folks. Well after 4 1/2 months of downtime and 2 diesel indys lookin over my car. The conclusion has been made that the IP is gone. What the hell Does anyone have any suggestions where I could order one for a reasonable price? Do I go rebuilt, new, used even? I am gonna try and do this myself. I want to do it right but as cheap as possible I mean who doesn't.

thanks

Go to a junkyard a grab a used one.

There's a '84 300D near me that still has one in it. just gotta look around.

Try Potomac German Auto on the east coast, or Silver Star Recyclers on the west coast. Both should have a good 603 pump. I suspect your mechanic is wrong, but I guess we'll find out when you get a different pump installed. A new/rebuild is about $750 from Gus at Pacifc Coast diesel injection, so I wouldn't want to pay much over $250-$350 for an unknown used one. If you get a used one, replace ALL the external seals (bottom, side, both rear, vac shutoff pod & O-ring, etc etc) before installing it!!!!

Almost everyone on here has told me that "my mechanic is wrong" What else could I suggest to him or to myself. I can do a little troubleshooting but I am pretty handsoff for the most part. Thanks

phil quoted me $650 with exchange on a rebuilt one. he only has one left. I may go that route.

Why don't you take the pump off the engine and have it tested at a diesel fuel specialist.Anyway what are the symptoms?

car cranks but no start. drove home from work Christmas eve no problems other than rough cold start and idle and the usual smoke. But always warmed up and ran perfect. would hot start without glowing everytime. Got up Christmas morning and nothing. Just cranks. Like it was outa fuel. My indy got it to start by shootin some ethyr or gas in it. I cant remember which one. When he cut it off he could not get it to run EVER again. So I dont know. I just know I sure miss driving it.

Joe,

If it runs good sometime, the pump probably doesn't have to be replaced.

Make sure fuel with some pressure is getting to the IP. It could just be air locked from a air leak in the fuel line. If it seems to be getting enough fuel read on.

I'm with Jetboy. Take the IP off and take it to a Bosch or Diesel injection shop.

If there is something simple wrong with your IP, they can fix it a reasonable cost, much less than the cost of a rebuilt IP.

Just a guess but sounds like no glow plug action to me.
simple test, turn on ignition but don't start it.Check for glow light and note how long it glows for.when it goes out reach down to the glow plugs and feel if they're warm to touch. If cold to the touch thats your problem
Regards

Joe,

Do a search for cabin light and follow directions there to check glow plugs (GP).

Or connect a test light or voltmeter to the GP.

I have the same car, and my CAT was plugged. There is a bolt on the exhaust manifold near the front of the car, take it out and see if it starts... I had the same symptoms as you have and removed the bolt and it started...do a search with my name and see the posts,. Maybe this is your problem. At least it is easy to try and free!!!!

...I don't know the history of your car, but have you tried cleaning the oxidation catalyst?

If plugging, the car will eventually not be able to start at all.

Sure sounds like no glow to me... have the glow plugs all be checked, and also the 80A fuse in the glow relay? On a side note, any "mechanic" who starts a Mercedes diesel with either gas OR ether (starting fluid) does NOT know what he's doing. I would not take the car back to that guy.

The plugged cat is another possibility. I assume the car already has the trap oxidizer removed under recall, and it has the cat downstream under the car. I would think if that was plugged, the car would fire, or try to fire, but not continue running. But, I've never experienced this failure before, and my cat mysteriously fell off the car a few years back so I doubt it will be a problem in the future.

uh oh

Pull the injection pump and look up Bosch Authorized Repair shop and get it to them to check out. Removing/installing the IP is a good diyer type of job.
