Calling 240D owners. Engine mount question
OK. Here's the situation. I am trying to find out wether my car is supposed to have engine mount shock's or not. Recently my engine mounts were replaced and my Indie thinks my car should have them. However while the lower bracket that the mounts attach to (it runs under the block) has holes which I think are for the shocks the upper brackets, that actually hold the engine itself do not. I looked at a 300D engine in his shop and these upper brackets had rings cast into them to which the shocks would mount. The ones on my car do not.
The part numbers on my upper engine mount brackets are 615 223 14 04 (passenger side) and 615 223 13 04 (driver side). Can any other 240D owners tell me if their cars have these shocks and if so what the part numbers of the upper brackets that they attach to are? - Peter.

My sold 79 had one, my 79 with the turbo engine in it now had none. If there is a angled piece of metal bolted to the cross member that sits against the oil pan the car did not come with a engine shock.

'79 & '80 240D do not have them. I spent quite a bit of time looking for and engine shock when I removed the engine from the '80.

I believe it's an automatic vs manual tranny issue.
My '82 automatic 240D has the engine shock, but my 81 'manual 240D doesn't. Happy Motoring, Mark

I think you are correct. The auto tranny 240Ds have them . as I remember the driver side motor mount has an opening through it to accommodate the engine shock. Manual tranny 240Ds DON'T have engine shocks.

I believe this is correct, both my 80 and 82 came with auto trannies, and both have that little angled support under the oil pan. Both also have a left side engine mount arm with a large hole in the center of it, which bolts an oval shaped steel plate over top of it that holds the top of the shock, the bottom of the shock goes through a loop hole in the crossmember directly below the arm. The crossmember only has one loop hole in it for the one shock on the 80, the 82 interestingly has the loop on both sides so it could be set up with dual shocks as the 300's had.

Both of mine were sticks, I guess one could have been a 4 speed conversion, but I really doubt it.

Doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to this. My car has the holes in the lower cross member that goes under the engine but no circular mounting points in the upper engine mount brackets. The ones with the 615 part numbers. That's why I'd like to know the part numbers of these on other 240D owners. My car was definatly in an accident early in it's history. Possibly these have been replaced with the wrong parts on mine. Also maybe when the engine was rebuilt 220K miles ago though why they'd then use the wrong parts is beyond me.
- Peter.

i'm new to the 240d ownership. i'll try to look but if someone gets handy with a camera and decided to post the area in question, that would be great. mine's manual so i'm guessing it doesn't have it according to the consensus.

My 80 had one. I don't use it on my 617.

From my factory Mercedes 615, 616, 617 engine manual -
"Engines 615, 616 in type 123.1 Note: Models with automatic transmissions have an engine shock absorber located between engine bearer and crossmember at left-hand side in straight ahead direction. The engine shock absorber was introduced subsequent to the beginning of the series. Previously manufactured models which are brought in on account of vibrations (stuttering) can be retrofitted with the shock absorber. This does not apply to models with manual transmission." Further on, the parts list for retrofitting an engine shock in a W123, gives part number 115 223 16 04 for the replacment aluminum engine bearer. Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks Mark. I guess that means I could retrofit the 115 engine bearing mount to get shocks on mine. Might try that if I can't fix the sideways shake at idle any other way.
- Peter.

Meanwhile, you should know that my shock-equipped automatic 240D, still vibrates worse at idle than my shock-free, manual 240D. (No, it's not the motor mounts - they're new on both cars) Happy Motoring, Mark
