im proud of my 240d

i have a 1981 240d and for the past yaer i have been renovating what other people have done oh btw its a 4speed. it had the origonal 4cyl in it and it burned oil like a fiend about 5 quarts every 20 miles. yeah it was bad. so then i scraped that engine and went to the junkyard found a 1983 240d yeah! it had a RECENTLY REBUILT ENGINE! OH YEAH!!!! I HIT IT BIG TIME! JACKPOT DING DING DING DING Ahem..... so i put that in with no idea if it would wook or run atall the only signs i had that it was rebuild was that it had blue silicone all around the oilpan. so i put it in hooked up all the electrical and fuel put new filters on and turned the key IT STARTED!!!! YAY!!! infact it ran fine and didnt burn any oil! EVEN BETTER. so now about 2-3 months later im going about 70 on the hiway and i feel this horrible rumble like the driveshaft is warped or out of balance. and its pissing me off so i pick up my friend and were bored and i have put so much work and time into this car that i thought it should give back some. i stopped at a 4way stop floored it and dropped the clutch i was amazed at how much the wheels spun then i quickly shifted into second IT CHIRPED!!! then shot it into third IT CHIRPED AGAIN!!!! then i went into forth like nothing happened. i just wanted to share this thrilling experience in my 240d

keep up the chirping and you won't have to worry about a little rumble.

you will break something.

It shouldn't......

Good Grief, guys side-step the clutch on 350 V-8 Gassers with sticks in birds & camaro's every day, and nothing breaks.... a 240D shouldn't be ABLE to break it's driveline! Especially not the drive shaft.... Have you hefted one of those babies?

BUT, I would HIGHLY recommend replacing both flex discs and the center support bearing if you're gonna do this often.... Unless of course you did this when you put the new motor & tranny in.....

I don't understand?

I had a 1975 240 W-115 and I never chirped anything from the day I bought it until I sold her in 1984 or 85. I was proud that it would get 29 mpg on the highway and more proud that my maintenance costs were very low.

I don't think I could chirp tires as that goofy assist'd clutch messed me up on many upshifts from first to second. I was so slow feeling through the gates that at times the speed would drop off enough to lug in second.

If your car hasn't spun the drive line through the bottom of the car yet please park it and fix it. You will even be more proud of it after a "cheep" repair.

I just like these cars.

I'm still recovering from trying to fight through the post #1 run-on sentence extravaganza.....
If you are dropping the clutch on these and chirping the gears, you aren't the sharpest pin in our little cushion here.........

Now see, us old guys grew up dropping the clutch on Mustangs and Camaro's and Trans Am's, etc...... There was a payoff in rubber and smoke.
It just seems like doing that to these fire breathing 62hp monsters is almost cruel.
You are doing a little better than me: the only way I can chirp the tires on my 240 is to stomp on the brakes.....
Have fun, just don't tear up what you don't really want to fix. Enjoy the Klackin........

I got mine (the same) to break traction for about half a second or so but it was rainy and all of that road grease on the hill I was stopped on was just seeping out. The car immediately sidestepped.

A 300SD floored on gravel/dirt will essentially never get going fast enough to attain grip, it will keep spinning the tires. I would know. But thats with a beefy powerful 617turbo

With the old tires I had long ago that came with the car, they had such bad traction that I could take off (briskly, not even flooring it) when it was raining, and the tires would break loose instantly and keep spinning till I let off the power. Needless to say I replaced those tires promptly. My current ones will only loose traction on ice/snow or gravel/dirt.
