HO alternator
I was wondering if a alternator like this would be hard to retrofit onto a 616 in a 240D. Just looking for some extra juice. Everything looks similar except the electrical connections. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/180-amp-Iraggi-Alternator-86-93-Mercedes_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33573QQihZ019QQitemZ7957001478QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

Look for a 115 Amp Bosch AL129X. It's commonly used in Saab's.

I agree with Lance. Your original is what 45 or 60? A 90A bosch is a common part and wouldn't require as much belt/power/wire gauge as a 180.

Yes, the 80A unit found on Saab 900's is much more common. I use one on my engine.

I found a new 90a (new style) on a 190 in the boneyard, $20, looks like a bolt-on swap on my 603, ... never understood the alternator sizing on '80s Benzes.

Run the 143-150A on your 603A, I do.

143-150A alternators from 1998-up M113/119/120 engines are a simple bolt-on for ANY engine with serpentine belts (OM60x, etc). I've got 150A units on all my cars. There's a thread here with details - I originally installed a 143A, but later bumped up to 150A:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=53237 For the V-belt engines (OM61x), you have to use the Saab-type units, 90-120A. |

Will the Saab Altenators bolt up?
And are any changes necessary to use one?

They bolt up, but you need to swap the pulleys over from your diesel. This is easiest with an impact wrench.
Also, you will want to upgrade your wiring to at least 4 gauge as it will be flowing more electricity. |
