Is my 240D knocking, nailing or both?

Audio clip!

1974 240D Engine Noise while Cold

The car makes the same noises when warm. What does it sound like to you all? What's causing it?

Damn good idea to get a noise heard!!! I second the exhaust manafold gasket blown. If your car DOESN'T have A/C then it is easy to pull the exhaust manafold. My '77 240D has A/C with the York compressor and the whole A/C bracket had to come off.

I concur, it could be an exhaust leak. It also sounded like it could be valve noise. I don't think it is either nailing or rod knock.

You didn't hear an exhaust leak or you can't hear the file?

If it was an exhaust leak, wouldn't the sound be consistently loud since the gas is escaping the entire time? It only makes that sound hard acceleration or on a hill.

I concur with the possibility of an exhaust leak.

The additional noise on hard acceleration is due to increased backpressure in the exhaust and nowhere for it to go but out the point where the gasket has failed.

Ditto, Sounds like an exhaust leak, as I've heard that sound many a time on some of our old farm trucks@

Thanks all, that does make sense. I didn't think to check the gasket since I haven't had the engine running with the hood open. I guess I will have to live with it and crank up the radio more!

I originally thought it was bad fuel because it was going away when I was running B100. It has gotten progressively worse. But hey it covers up the bearing noise! which befuddles me becuase it's brand new!

Definitely sounds like an exhaust leak to me too. What 'bearing' noise is it covering up?? A head gasket should be relatively easy to fix on your 240d. BYW, is that the engine you were offering me?
