My first thought is you turned the headlight switch too far counterclockwise engaging the left park lights. Key off, headlight switch turned off to the vertical position the lites have no voltage supplied.

it's a parking light

Look at your manual on the headlight switch (knob). If your knob is clocked in the right position it will keep your left or right indicator solid. It is a "feature" so if you are parked on the side of the road at night, cars will see the edge of the car.

one of those crazy euro features on our cars

If it's not the headlight switch as suggested, and you're sure it's absolutely in the middle position, try turning on and off the flasher switch a couple of times.
If you're on the East coast with all the recent rain, there just might be enough moisture to trigger the hazard switch gremlin.

x2, first thing I thought of and also the first mistake I made when I drove my Mercedes home for the first time and flipped that switch as far to the left as I could

thanks for the responses. I will check the parking light theory. although have had lights on and off. it also randomly comes and goes. when not stuck on hazards will work. when stuck on only right directional will flash. But let me check out the parking light idea thanks

Also there is a relay forward of the shifter on the 123 chassis that powers the 4 way flasher switch. Could be a sticking relay? But I've never read a thread where the one light stays on. Only that the signals do not work.

Change all your fuses

Have you changed all of your fuses? If you have the old metal kind that looks white and pitted, get rid of them. ALL of them. Replace them with the copper kind. You can replace them all for like, $12. The older ones, even if they look good, could be causing electrical resistance, which will cause weird electrical problems.
