85 300D Turbo trans shift handle location problem

A freind just picked up a 85 TD 300 123 series and the previous owner had a new ( rebuilt) trans done one year ago. The shift points on the console do not match ..

example: "park" is reverse etc. They are all off by 2 positions approx... in other words in when it is in drive it is in the " L " position and drives fine.
Trans is fine.. pretty sure adjustment is all that is needed.

Do I need to worry about the trans shift cable going to the pedal linkage as well?

I hate that... my tranny shop routinely returns vehicles to me this way. (I don't pay anything for tranny work though, so it's hard to complain...) I would start by pulling out the shifter and examining how it connects. then figure out what needs to be adjusted to fix it. sorry, I have not done anything shifter related on any of my MB flock, however, the 79TD is a bit loose, so I may look into it soon.
take pictures.

From the shifter box in the center console to the transmission linkage is an adjustable rod. Notice item number 378 in the attached picture. You will have to adjust that linkage to get the tranny and shifter in sinc.
