Would this work?

Any chance one of these overdrive units, http://www.gearvendors.com/custom.html , would work on our cars? Just researching.. Their way out of my budget..

I'm not sure why you'd want to, if you want taller gears change the final-drive.

The installation would be extremely difficult for two reasons I can see: space in the driveshaft tunnel won't allow an overdrive unit; the M-B driveshaft is not designed with U-joints, would need to be adapted perhaps with CV joints for this application. Mostly the first point however.

I doubt there would be enough room in the tunnel.

the GV unit is AWESOME! but it is 1/2 the size of our transmissions. it will be a tough install. it gives 8 gears worth of shifting. it can be set up with autoshift, so your system upshifts and downshifts automatically between shifts. really amazing system.

Want better top speed (at least 125mph, more is better), but tons of acceleration off the line too. Mainly just researching what I can do when I start building the superturbo... or just dreaming of building one... Definitely not planned for any time within the next few years..

Any smaller overdrive units out there? And/or would approx 300HP be able to spin the rear wheels with a much lower ratio?

By the time you're old enough to afford tires from "burn-outing" them to destruction, you probably won't be interested in doing it anymore.

Wow....what am I saying, I'm only 20!

Top speed is about 110mph with a 617 powered SD. You cannot go faster no matter what gears you put into it due to the horsepower limitations.

In fact, it might be that the 2.88 geared SD's won't achieve the same top speed as the 3.07 geared SD's.........due to insufficient horsepower.

That unit will offer you some better performance off the line..........but, at what cost?

It doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

I bet a 617 powered W126 with a 2.47 rear end and a sophisticated propane injection system and inter cooling could easily surpass 140mph. Our '83 has maxed out around 113mph....and it pulled strong all the way too that, I bet it could do 120 with a 2.88 diff.

I'll bet that it didn't do 113mph.......speedometer error. There is insufficient hp to achieve that speed. With the 2.88, it might have run slower.

The '83 is faster than my '82....flat out on the freeway it runs at 5200rpm....so whatever speed that is in mph. (stock tires and 3.07 diff) The gauge claims about 121mph at that rpm, but its a 2.47 calibrated speedo. (160mph gauge)

It sure feels fast, thats for sure.

The engine has 0 blowby too, nothing at all. you can lay a square of paper over the opening with it running and it won't move.

My '82 has a significant amount of blowby...... Still starts ok down to -5F though.

I'm guessing you're someplace in the 110 - 115 mph range at 5200 rpm (extrapolating from my car). I've never pushed mine past about 95, I like to keep it below around 4000 rpm (old guy, old engine).

I busted 110 in my euro on a long downhill stretch.

Depends on the diameter of the tires.........however.........I estimate 113mph with 50% tire wear and 400 rpm t/c slippage at that speed (maximum horsepower).

There is just insufficient hp to go 120 mph in an SD.

Even 113mph is amazing.
