Rear Axle Bearing Tools

Has anyone done this job on a W123 using the Baum Tool socket for the slot nut (Baum # 915-0207)?

I just received my socket from Baum Tools and it looks like I'll need to take off about 1mm outside diameter off the tool so it will fit inside the outward turned edges of the thrust washer. When I called to inquire, they told me I needed tool # 915-0107 instead, which if you look up in their catalog and also in the M-B FSM is actually made for removing the slot nut on the differential's universal flange to the propeller shaft.

Am I supposed to remove something before taking the slot nut out, or is this tool flawed?

See if they will swap it since it's the wrong tool. Baum is not the cheapest stuff.

Is it the wrong tool? I've searched and the same part number (915-0207) was recommended for the job I'm doing in another post.

The Baum Tool catalog (and the Fastlane special tool link) shows I have the right tool for rear axle bearing retainer nut removal. The ~0107 tool is listed for differential pinion retainer nut removal (which would be on the propeller shaft flange). I don't know why Baum Tools told me I needed that tool when I explained to them what I was doing. They even compared sizes of the two tools in hand over the phone and the 0107 tool had a much smaller diameter. I have a 1mm problem, so that doesn't sound right.

Do I need to remove anything from the bearing assembly before I use the groove nut socket? It didnt appear that way in the FSM.

Good question. I would contact Baum and find out. You do not want to shave off metal on a new tool. If it's a socket it will weaken the socket wall and possibly cause the socket to crack...don't ask how I found out that one...and if it has any type of guarantee, it will be voided.

I have not worked on rear bearings yet. Front ones are not loads of fun either.
